Written: Oct 13 '06 (Updated Oct 28 '06)
Pros:JD Robb keeps you on the edge of your seat with this fast-paced mystery.
Cons:not one con in the book (except for those in jail)
The Bottom Line: Immortal in Death is a riveting murder mystery that holds your attention throughout the entire book.

For those who have not yet read the first two books of the in Death series, let me introduce to you, our list of characters.

EVE DALLAS: Detective of the NYPSD (New York Police and Security Department). Eve is a tough, by-the-book cop who learned only recently, that she can bend the rules to apprehend and bring to justice, the guilty in her beloved New York City.

While Dallas is strong and tough on the outside, she has a past she doesn’t remember but continues to plague her in vivid and haunting nightmares.

Tall and strikingly beautiful, she has captured the heart of our next character.

ROARKE: a self-made multi-billionaire, Roarke is a tall, handsome and devilish rogue who grew up hard and fast on the street of Dublin only to escape to American and make his fortune – mostly, until recently, was made illegally. When he first laid his eyes on the ever provocative and stunning detective, he vowed to himself that once she was his, he’d change his ways – or at least try to.

MAVIS FREESTONE: a rock-star in the making is Dallas’ best friend. While they are completely opposite in everything including understanding each other, they have accepted each other’s personality. Dallas needs someone to shift her gears and help her enjoy life and Mavis needs someone to help her, at times, keep her feet on the ground.

The friendship works and their mutual trust grows.

Dallas is ecstatic when Mavis meets and falls in love with clothes designer, Leonardo.

SOMMERSET: Butler, valet, cook and housekeeper but most of all friend and companion of Roarke. When Roarke was a young boy, Sommerset, not only saved his life but gave him a fresh start by taking him in and caring for him. Roarke swears that if it had not been for Sommerset, he would have died on the streets of Dublin. To repay the kindness the older man showed to the young Roarke, the now billionaire, shares his home, his wealth and his life with the man who saved it.

Much to the chagrin of Eve who seems to have nothing more than complete dislike for the stiff butler who seems to feel the same emotion for her.

Through this book, you’ll meet several of Dallas’ other friends-in-making, Office Delia Peabody, NYPSD Computer geek and cop, Feeney, NYPSD Commander, Whitney, Channel 75 news reporter, Nadine Furst and Psychiatrist, Dr. Charlotte Mira.

I use the term “friends-in-making” because Dallas find it difficult to make friends. Although she is well like by many people, when she feels a bond forming, she withdraws into her own private hell of loneliness. To her amazement, many of these people won’t leave alone until she accepts them as she did Mavis.

Now that you’ve been introduced to some of the key characters in the In Death series, let’s read on about IMMORTAL IN DEATH.

Would you want to be immortal? What would you do to become immortal? Would you be willing to die for it?

I doubt many people would be willing to make that sacrifice but there are others who are not given that choice.

Take, top model, Pandora, for instance. She had everything going for her – looks, a great body, money, prestige, fame, men falling at her feet. Yes, she had everything – including a vicious jealous streak a mile wide.

While Pandora loved the attention of men, she wanted the sole attention of one man in particular - Leonardo. She found it difficult to accept the fact that Leonardo fell in love with Mavis.

The beginning of this story finds our heroine, Eve Dallas, preparing for her wedding. She enlists the help of her good friend, Mavis to help her find a wedding dress. Mavis is thrilled and insists that Eve make use of the many talents of her lover, Leonardo.

One afternoon while Eve is being measured, Pandora storms Leonardo’s studio and verbally rips him up one side and down the other. Then she begins on Dallas. In a fit of temper, Pandora leaves but vows to return.

In the middle of the night, Dallas’ link beeped and upon answering it, hears Mavis screaming for help. “You’ve got to come” “Dallas, Oh God! Dallas. I need help!”

Dallas finds out that Mavis went to Leonardo’s studio only to find him gone and Pandora dead.

Since Mavis had motive and opportunity, she is now the prime suspect and it’s up to Eve to prove her innocent - even though all the evidence indicates otherwise.

Anyone with an imagination must realize how difficult it must be trying to plan your wedding and solve a murder mystery at the same time. Much to Eve’s relief, Roarke takes all the burden of the wedding off the shoulders of Eve and on to his own. All she needs to do is show up! But right now, clearing her friend is her primary concern. She eats, sleeps, breathes of ways to find the murderer and bring him to justice. But in the meantime, she must arrest Mavis.

How do you tell your best friend that she’s under arrest?

Roarke, though he does his best to remain a legitimate and respectable businessman, often delves into his mystery office where he maintains a large computer area that is completely untraceable.

Although Dallas tries to remain a “by-the-book” cop, she finds she must break her own code of ethics and ask Roarke for help.

So, who actually murdered Pandora?

Was it Mavis?

Or maybe Leonardo did the dirty deed to rid himself of a hysterical clinging vine?

Maybe Roarke learned of the hard time Pandora was giving Leonardo and he wanted nothing to interfere with the making of Eve’s wedding dress.

Or was it the person who supplied Pandora with her Immortal Drugs?

Or maybe it was someone else who had a good reason to lay to rest the popular and beautiful Pandora.

Once again, JD Robb (a/k/a/ Nora Roberts) excels in the saga of Eve Dallas.

You’ll want to wrap your arms around Mavis as she screams, “Help me”.

You’ll want to slap Dallas as she arrests her friend but then hug her you realize that in order to clear her friends name, she must first play by the book. By arresting Mavis, she is also protecting her.

Your heart will tear in two as you fall witness to Eve’s recurring nightmares and you’ll fall completely in love with Roarke only because he loves Eve with every ounce of his being.

This is more than a murder mystery / love story. It's the epitome of life's roller coaster ride. This book takes your breath away and give it right back to you with every twist, every turn of the page.

Immortal in Death is definitely one book you won’t want to miss reading.
