| jo.com's Full Review: Imodium Advanced Caplets 12 Caplets |
I am reviewing Imodium Advanced a product I initially bought for my dog at the recommendation of her vet. Since then, I have needed it when I eat foods my body is not used to.
About the product:
Imodium Advanced Chewable Tablets are mint-flavored ˝ inch round medication that, we are told, should control the symptoms of diarrhea plus bloating, pressure and cramps that we usually call gas.
You can buy them in packages of 12, 18 or 30 tablets. I have the package of 12 and paid $5.69 for it.
The 12 tablets come in individual blister squares. Each square is perforated making them very easy to separate from each other. They are easy to open. You will not need a scissors to cut the tablet out of the blister covering. There is a fold in the corner and you really only have to fold it and pull and the backing will come right off. There is a slit down the middle when you need 1/2 of the tablet.
Make sure the carton is not opened when you buy this and that the blister unit is not broken. They should be stored between 68 degrees to 77 degree Fahrenheit. I am learning that bathrooms are not the best place to keep medicines because of the humidity so I keep my medications now in a hall closet, kitchen cabinet or refrigerator when applicable.
There is a stamped expiration date on the side flap. It isnt the easily number to see, but it is visible and my package is good until 2005!
How to use Imodium Advanced and the taste:
There is a very specific chart on the package that clearly spells out dosages. We are also told to drink plenty of clear fluids because diarrhea often causes dehydration.
When I have taken it I have chewed the first dose (Which is 2 tablets for adults.) with water after my first loose stool. If that didnt work I do this again (taking only one tablet) after the next one. I have had luck in not needing a second dose every time but I have also needed a second one occasionally. Really, if I am going to work, I will take an extra dose even if my next stool isnt lose just as a preventative measure. As a substitute teacher, leaving the classroom is a difficult to pull off option! The maximum number per day is 4 tablets.
For children 9-11 years (60-95 pounds) the first dose is 1 tablet and the next dose is 1/2 tablet. For this age group the maximum number per day is 3 tablets. Children 6-8 years (48-59 pounds) take 1 tablet for the first dose and the next one is 1/2 tablet. For this age group the maximum number per day is 2 tablets. You need to talk with your doctor for children under 6 years old (up to 47 lbs.). These are not for children under the age of 6 years old.
I dont like swallowing pills in spite of the 13 supplements I take a day, so when possible I buy chewable supplements and medicines. I cant say these are delicious but the mint flavor definitely makes them palatable. You will definitely want to drink lots of water, though, because they arent tasty or delicious by any stretch of the imagination. If they work, though, they are worth the slightly bitter; chalky taste which may make your mouth sting a little like it makes mine!
As an aside....some of you may not know that you can buy a pill cutter. It is just an inexpensive plastic piece that works wonders to cut pills. I bought mine in the drugstore. I really suggest you have one rather than trying to cut medications with a knife or your hand. These happen to be soft and easy to split but something else you may have may not be as easy.

The results:
My dog: This did not work for her but she is very sick and needed a prescription medication, which we give her when she has bouts.
Me: It does work for me. It has every single time. As I said I try to only take 2 tablets once if it works which it almost always does the first time around unless I have to work. Most often my runs stop after the first dose. Imodium makes other products as well and I have found Imodium A-D Caplet to work effectively as well.
Ironically I had bought those a couple of years ago, first for my dog, Buffy, (She has since died.) but then for me Those worked for her for awhile but then she too needed a prescription. I did not find the advanced formula to be any different than A-D Caplets so if you hate to chew medication you may want to stick with the caplets. They are less money than the chewable. You will pay less than $5.00 for 12, but this is both a personal decision and one based on your symptoms. The Advance targets gas as well as diarrhea so pay attention to that difference. A-D Caplets only target diarrhea. The A-D Caplets also only contain the active ingredient Loperamide HCI 2 mg per caplet.(anti-diarrhea) They do not contain Simethicone 125 mg. (anti-gas).
My final thoughts:
I think you probably have as much information as you could possibly want on this product but if you have any questions, feel free to leave a comment.
I have had really good luck with Imodium products and the Advanced formula targets more than one symptom. Drink lots of water not only to prevent dehydration but it will cut down on the slightly nasty taste. (The taste is actually getting worse as I review this product since of course I needed the taste fresh in my mind so I had to sample it!) They are reasonably priced considering you can only take 4 a day for 2 days. I definitely recommend them.
