Pros: Effective, Easy To Use, Cost
Cons: Perhaps A Little Heavy Under Load
Shindaiwa has a long pedigree of providing quality hand and power tools that serve both the consumer and professional alike. Based on a long standing satisfaction with their products, I decided to purchase a number of Shindaiwa sprayers for my company.
A while ago I purchased the SP 150 to see if it would stand up to the rigors of the commercial environment. I am pleased to say that it did indeed though my only reservation was the frequency of refilling, which I addressed with the purchase of both the SP 300 and SP 415, to which this article refers.
Often in a commercial environment you are required to apply cleaners, sanitizers, solvents and just water to make meet the challenges of a job at hand. Keeping in mind that time is an essential component of profit, the challenge to provide your staff with tools that will facilitate effective time management should always be considered whenever possible.
On a recent rehab we had to remove room after room of the ugliest wallpaper I have ever seen in a triplex which should not have been a problem if there weren't three and four layers of paper applied over top each other without sizing. The Shindaiwa SP 415 proved to be an effective tool meeting this challenge.
In the box, Shindaiwa makes it easy to up and running.. Aside from the wand and pump handle there is minimal hardware consisting of cotter pins and washers along with a packet containing repair kit with replacement piston cup, diaphragm valves, trigger valve needle assembly, cap fan nozzle and a grey deflector nozzle. Assembly is straightforward and takes minutes to complete. Once assembled, you are ready to put the Shindaiwa SP 415 to task.
Adjusting the thick webbed strapping to fit your torso, you want to allow for easy upper body movement and getting in and out of the backpack. Under fire, the Shindaiwa SP 415 allows the user to maintain a steady pace, totally eliminating standing over the unit to pump air into the tank.. The mounted steel handle is held in place by a properly fitted back mounted SP 415 facilitating easy manipulation of the pump lever assembly and 5" piston. Of note is the fact that the pump handle assembly can be quickly adapted for left or right handed staffers, which goes a long way to accommodate user comfort. With a capacity of four gallons, you could easily add 32 lbs to the 10.5 lb. unit, you have to evaluate how long a wearer would have to work under this weight and perhaps use a lighter unit i.e. Sp 300 or SP 150 to adjust for the time a worker would have under that load. We hire a couple of hard working females one of which rivals some of the bigger guys, pound for pound, but weight issues always prove a concern.
The SP 415's wand measures 27 ½" and is constructed of hard plastic and flexes slightly as you apply your content. The trigger grip can be locked down for continuous spray, which enhances user ergonomics. The four gallon tank is constructed of high density UV protected polyethylene which makes it appropriate for most chemical applications. Viton chemically resistant seals assure long service life for those seals maintaining the structural integrity of the SP 415.
Filling is easy with the top mounted 4.5" filler cap. Underneath that cap is a convenient graduated 9 ounce/ 250 ml. measuring cup which can remain in the removable plastic strainer which is effective for granular particulate.
Our wallpaper removing challenge took place with little effort as the SP 415's capability to forcefully address our plaster wall surfaces, softening the effect of the spray simply by backing away from the work. Care has to be exercised when applying to drywall or other porous surfaces as you can move a lot of content in a small time frame. Fill frequency varied though it was easy to empty the SP 415 in ten minutes under constant content dispersal.
There is little negative that can be said of the Shindaiwa SP 415 as it delivers beyond expectations. Often hand held or backpack sprayers suffer from seal or hose failure. The five foot hose on the SP 415 has stood the test with a number of solvents, and user abuse. It is reassuring that all parts can be replaced easily at a reasonable cost. Shindaiwa's dealer network is expansive and those parts are readily available as I recently found having to replace a webbed strapped that was shipped to me in two days.
Aside from some weight concerns, there is little I can complain about the SP 415; it's a great sprayer that could serve most users quite effectively.
