bops_mom's Full Review: Incase Protective Cover for iPhone 3G - Black (CL5...
When I received my iPhone 3G back in October 2008 as an early birthday/Christmas gift it look me a whole 30 seconds to realize I needed to get something to protect is ASAP. On my next trip to Target I took a look at what they had in stock. Though I didn’t have much of an idea of what would be available I did know that I did not want anything that was going make my phone even bigger or bulkier than it already was. That ruled out all the hard plastic type cases. I also knew I did not want a soft silicone case as a co-worker had one for her Treo and it got stretched out so quickly just from normal use that it seemed like a waste of money to me.
When I saw the Incase Protective Cover for iPhone 3G in Black I thought it was probably what I was looking for. I had purchased an Incase Protective Cover for my son’s iPod Nano and was happy with how sturdy the cover was without being bulky.
Basic Info
I believe the Incase Protective Cover for iPhone 3G was priced around $25. Since it has the color (black) listed on the box I’m guessing they must make it in other shades as well though the black was the only one at Target. The back of the cover has a print that looks like a giant/blown up view of a finger print. The back also features the Incase logo.
There are cut outs in the cover for the camera, vibrate/silence on/off button, headphone jack and USB port. The volume buttons and the off button are covered completely. The Incase Protective Cover for iPhone 3G fits very snugly (as it should). It was a slight struggle to get it on there (I have the 16 GB – the box says it’s for both the 8 GB & 16 GB) but once on the fit was beautiful. The cover is made to fully enclose the back and all four sides of the iPhone 3G but does not cover the front. Meaning, the main menu button is not covered, nor is the surrounding area covered.
How does it do for protection?
Incase calls this a cover and not a case. I suppose they are correct, though I do feel like it’s a case. I am pretty careful with my iPhone 3G but I have dropped it – more than once. The first time was when it was just weeks old. It hit the concrete outside my apartment with the USB port side down. It actually managed to get a slight chip in it, nothing tremendously noticeable but if you look for it, you’ll find it. I know without the Incase Protective Cover my phone may very well have been toast at that moment (and no I did not have insurance on it and yes I was totally freaked out that I had killed my iPhone 3G).
Since then I’ve dropped it a few times and every time it almost bounces because of the material of the cover. The cover seems to absorb the shock since it is completely covered on all 4 corners, the entire back and almost all of the four sides. Because of that my iPhone 3G would really have to drop and hit at a weird angle on a weird surface (such as the concrete outside my apartment) in order to do any damage.
Any cons?
From time to time I almost wish theIncase Protective Cover for iPhone 3G had some color or a design but for the most part I’m pretty pleased that it’s a simple black. I feel like it makes my iPhone 3G look super sleek. I’ve seen some of the cases other people have and they look kind of weird and almost childish to me (says the girl who likes Hello Kitty).
So the only real issue I have with the Incase Protective Cover for iPhone 3G is that if you have to remove and replace it – each time the fit will become less snug. I can tell this would happen as I have had to remove it twice so far. I’m sure this is normal and typical for this type of cover and thankfully it does not become stretched out from normal use.
And so
It’s been almost a year now that I’ve had the Incase Protective Cover for iPhone 3G on my iPhone 3G and I can’t tell you how pleased I am with my purchase. I pretty much just lucked out as I had no idea how good it was going to be when I made my purchase. I’ve since visited the local Apple store and have seen many options for an iPhone 3G case/cover. Even so I’m still pleased with theIncase Protective Cover for iPhone 3G.
I really feel this case offers some seriously good protection without adding a ton of bulk. An added benefit that never would have occurred to me when I made my purchase was – the material of this case keeps it from slipping and sliding. It’s very easy for me to hold onto it and on a slanted surface (or dashboard of a car) it doesn’t move around.
Since even a phone's cover will get dirty from time to time I'm pleased with how easy it is to clean. I have just been using an antibacterial wipe and letting it air dry. I also like how I can charge my iPhone 3G without having to remove the cover – I can even dock it on my clock radio without having to remove the cover. Very handy!
As a side note: My co-worker (the former Treo owner) bought an iPhone 3G back in May 2009 and got a soft, smooth silicone cover. It’s a lot thinner than this cover, is already stretched out and already feels weird to the touch. I’m so glad ended up with the Incase Protective Cover for iPhone 3G in Black.
