About "The Joe Review"other than I'm a pompous fool who believes his name means something :).
The one thing I look for in a movie more than everything else combined is a good, detailed, imaginative story. I HATE movies that combine a great idea, a 90 million dollar special effects budget and an aggressive marketing campaign with a script that seemed like it was thrown together over a burger and fries at McDonald's.
I also try to give away as little of the plot as possible, as typically, the less you know about a movie the more you enjoy it. (For example, I didn't know that A Beautiful Mind was based on a true story and I really thought Russell Crowe's character had been kidnapped! :) ).
Eye candy, especially when it comes in the form of Salma Hayak, Reese Witherspoon or Barbara Mori, is ALWAYS a plus for me as well :).
And now, the review
One of the advantages cartoons have is how you can do ANYTHING - cartoons have so much less excuse for a lack of imagination than a normal movie. Among my favorites are the exaggerated facial expressions, like eyes getting really big or jaws dropping or a really mad face :) Pixar takes advantage of their medium very fully!
The story is very imaginative. I loved the spin on the superheroes getting SUED and having to return to cubicle life!!! Is that not the most appropriate microcosm of modern life there IS? Save someone's life and get sued! What a mingling of fantasy cartoon life with real life. The sight of Mr. Incredible almost overflowing his little cubicle, with that grrgrumbleicantbelieveimdoingthisgrumble facial expression nearly made me laugh out loud without hearing a word!
The choices of the voice actors including the guy who played Fazzini in The Princess Bride as the annoying insurance CEO and the Annie-Potts-on-steroids who played the costume maker who wouldn't shut up, are superb in this movie. Samuel L Jackson did a good job playing his superhero too.
This is a VERY funny movie, and one of the best I've seen in a LONG time! Great story, great scenery, imaginative scenes. I would have like to have seen a little MORE imagination in how the heroes team up to use their powers to beat the bad guy (oh, by the way, the good guys win - sorry for spoiling the movie ;) ) because it was pretty obvious as soon as you learned everyone's powers how they'd team up, but it was still funny - the jokes are funny and the drawings and animations are funny - it's nonstop cute from start to end.
