kowrip's Full Review: Infinity BassLink Car Subwoofer
INTRO
After I paid off my Jeep Grand Cherokee last year, I decided that I wanted a better sound system than the stock CD player and speakers. I wanted a head unit that could play MP3s and definitely wanted sound quality and bass. The problem was that my Jeep has very shallow pockets for speakers and they only accept 6 and 1/2" speakers. There was just no way that I was going to get any decent bass out of these. In the past, I had very good results with Kenwood 6" X 9" speakers, but they required much more depth than my Jeep had. I also didn't want to go through the hassle of building my own system with amps, crossovers, subwoofers and enclosures. A few friends of mine recommended the Infinity Basslink. It seemed like a perfect fit for what I needed, was priced decently and got great reviews. So, I decided to purchase it.
CONTENTS
The package includes the main amplifier/subwoofer unit itself, 4 mounting brackets (to mount it two different ways), mounting screws, a wired remote for controlling the amount of bass, a wire for the remote and 4 sets of wires for "speaker level" inputs in case your stereo does not have RCA outputs for an amplifier. The main unit includes 4 RCA inputs (L and R for both front and rear), power connection terminals, a wired remote terminal, a bass cutoff frequency adjustment knob, a phase switch and a fuse holder.
SETUP / INSTALLATION
As with most car stereo systems, installation was quite time consuming and required some basic knowledge of cars and electronics. It also didn't include any of the RCA or power wires, so an additional car amplifier kit was needed. The main problems I had with the installation were figuring out exactly where to mount the unit and the wired remote. I ended up just using velcro to secure the remote to a spot under the dashboard on the driver's side. Overall, the installation was about what I expected. It took most of the day to install the new stereo, 4 new speakers and the Infinty Basslink.
OPERATION
After getting everything installed, I cranked up some great tunes and adjusted the frequency cutoff knob, phase switch and bass level to where it sounded the best. The bass is very deep and extremely impressive on this unit. It complemented my new head unit and 4 new speakers very nicely. I also find that the bass is not too boomy either. I've only listened to 1 or 2 songs where I felt that the bass was overly boomy. The power is sufficient as well. I can crank it up high enough to make my rear-view mirror rattle. 200W is obviously nowhere near the power that is delivered by the top end amps, but it certainly delivers nicely. The wired remote is a very nice feature. The only complaint I have is that the bass adjustment seems to make a big jump from a little bass to a lot of bass. There's a middle range that's missing. Overall, the sound is outstanding. It adds the perfect touch to my stereo and other speakers. I was also able to install the whole system (CD/MP3 head unit, front and rear 6 1/2" speakers, Basslink and installation accessories) for only $575 thanks to the $260 price tag on the Basslink.
CONCLUSION
While you can design more complicated, louder and better sounding bass systems for your vehicle, you'll be spending a lot more money and putting in significantly more effort than if you install this unit. Unless you are the kind of person that needs your bass to be heard from 3 blocks away, there's really no reason that this unit wouldn't satisfy your needs and save you money at the same time. I recommend it for anybody who wants to add more bass to their car audio systems.
