| dhuting92's Full Review: Infinity Kappa 462.3cfp Car Speaker |
To start off this review, let me give you an idea of what type of setup I had, and the type I was looking for.
I have a 92 Lumina, with a GM-sized (1.5 din) opening. I had a Pioneer DEH-P77DH fat faced cd player, along with Alpine 4x6's and 6x9s, both of which were being powered by the deck. Altogether it was a sweet sounding system, but I couldnt turn it loud enough without the 6x9's bottoming out and the high's blending together. I decided I wanted bigger and better, so I bought a Pioneer DEH-P740MP mp3 player cd player. I wanted the speakers to be amplified, but the Alpine's I had were not strong enough to be run by an amp. I bought a Pioneer GM-X564 amplifier which puts out 50x4 constant. Then I bought Infinity's top-of-the-line 462.3 cfp plate 4x6s, which take 60 contant; perfect for the amp. No other plate 4x6 I could find had better power handling abilites. I considered Infinity's top end 6x9's as well but they took 110 constant and 330 RMS. A little too powerful than what was needed, so I looked around and found the Pioneer TS-A6995s: 4-way speakers that take 80W rms (constant) and 300 max. As close to perfect as possible for what I needed. Right now these 4x6's are getting about 50w RMS, about double than what the CD player puts out (The new Pioneers put out about 22.4w RMS).
As for the sound, the Infinity 462.3cfp's really do the job. Note: If you plan on buying these, make sure you have means of blocking any low freqencies. When I first put these in I didnt think to turn on the HPF on my amp, and I blew one of them within a few hours of having the volume and bass up extremely high to test them out. The little 3" speaker was dancing with the bass and just couldnt take that much. So I sent them back and got a new set (free). If you plan on powering these from your CD player you won't have to worry as much about blowing these, but they just won't handle the amount of bass a 50x4 amp tries to give them. After I got the second set in and hooked up, I crossed them at about 125Hz through the amp. Perfect. The separate tweeters on the 462.3cfp's are very noticable and eliminate the need to mount any tweeters on the dash or A pillar. Altogether these 4x6's give me exactly what I want from them: Amazingly clear, crisp, and sharp sounding highs that hold their own regardless of how much power I give them. With all of the bass cut off, these speakers will never do you wrong provided the power source is feeding them clean, pure sound that doesnt exceed 60 rms.
I paid a total of $88.95 for these from Ike's Electronics off of an ebay auction. I believe you can still find these for the same price at similar auctions right now.
Here are the specs from Infinity:
Infinity Kappa series loudspeakers use Ceramic Metal Matrix Diaphragms™ (C.M.M.D.): the most significant mid- and high-frequency-diaphragm advance in the last twenty years.
Multi-elements are clearly the easiest way to upgrade your system. They consist of an integrated tweeter and midrange/woofer. These speakers are designed to fit right into your factory locations with few, if any modifications. Infinity offers two extremely compelling lines of multi-element loudspeakers. Our Reference Series represents perhaps the best value of any premium brand in its price range, and our Kappa Series multi-elements are simply spectacular. These speakers have won numerous awards for their incredible audiophile-grade performance
Ceramic Metal Matrix Diaphragms™ with Plus One™ (patent pending) - Infinity's Ceramic Metal Matrix Diaphragm material is a major breakthrough in transducer-diaphragm technology. For tweeters, it offers superior stiffness and damping compared to traditional metal domes, moving the first significant breakup mode to the 30kHz region. For woofer and midrange applications, it offers pistonic operation over the entire usable range of the driver, completely eliminating colorations due to cone breakup modes and, thus, dramatically reducing distortion. Finally, the diaphragm will not deteriorate when exposed to moisture, sunlight or extreme temperatures, making ceramic metal matrix an ideal material for automotive applications. Each Kappa loudspeaker also features Plus One. This technology allows us to deliver a cone that is up to 30% larger than those in competing speakers of the same size. The result of this patent-pending technology is an audible increase in efficiency and bass output
Cast-Polymer Speaker Baskets - Each Kappa model uses a nonconductive, cast-polymer basket to ensure all magnetic energy is focused at the voice coil. This execution yields increased efficiency and midrange detail
