martymcleod's Full Review: Infinity Kappa Perfect6.1 Car Component System
Definitely one of the best purchases I made. These component speakers, in similar fashion to my Kappa Perfect 12.1 subwoofer, are true performers.
DETAILS: I purchased two (2) pairs of the Kappa Perfect 6.1 sets for my last install in my 1993 Honda Accord using a 5.1 Dolby Digital/DTS supported system. I wanted a high-fidelity speaker set for both front and rear. Naturally, given their rave reviews, the Kappas came to mind.
The 6.1s include an EXCELLENT crossovers with adjustable tweeter level (note: failure to reduce the tweeter level can cause a "metallic" or over-bright sound), tinted green clear plastic casing, and what appears to be impedance compensation circuitry also. Crossover slope is rated at -24dB/octave, at 3.5 kHz or so. These aluminum cone speakers are something special indeed.
As anyone with crossover design and tuning experience knows, in a high fidelity system the crossover plays a tremendous role. I attribute the near-flat frequency response to these great crossovers.
PERFORMANCE AND SOUND: I was astonished, for the first time in my life, to have a set of speakers with an almost flat frequency response. That means I had to do very little equalization! The response of these speakers is great, with very detailed sound reproduction, and my audio system immediately improved several fold. The speakers provide o.k. low end response, but excel in mid-bass. I have not satisfactorily enclosed the woofers for better low-end response, so I cannot comment on that honestly. I have been quite please with vocals and snare drums, though, I must say, using these 6.1s!
*The 6.1s do not sound "metallic" or overbright once they were allowed time to break in and once proper tweeting and equalization levels were adjusted. Until that point they levels were really out-of-the-park, however.
SIDE NOTES:
1. The retail pricing on the units is hard to swallow. I purchased mine new off of eBay for only $165.00 + S & H/1 pair vs. about $400 or so retail! Yikes! However, some sellers on the internet have a habit of peeling off the serial numbers on these! Still though, saving $200. or so is fantastic. Unfortunately, Infinity, like many other manufacturers, doesn't support products purchased off of the internet.
2. The speakers are a little tough to install (woofers). The baskets are quality, heavy, and quite solid, but extend down due to the unique design. Don't expect to just "drop them in" in place of those old Sony 6.5"s you're using--I would advise you to be prepared for additional hole cutting or similar. The tweeters use the standard surface or hole-mounting pods, however, and that shouldn't be any more difficult.
3. The lightweight aluminum cones on the woofer are easy to dent! Take care when handling.
All in all, if you are looking for a great performing set of speakers, and if you can get a set for a reasonable price (these are high-end, after all!!), go for it! You won't regret it.
Smooth & flat response, quality design and construction, and some of the best sound I've ever heard...once again, Infinity has brought perfection to us...KAPPA PERFECTion!
