Sometimes when I’m driving down the highway, I like to pretend I’m racing the other drivers. Speeding along the road, usually above the speed limit but like who doesn’t, dodging the traffic and passing cars is a thrill. That is, until some crazy person (not gonna mention any stereotypes like old folks who can’t see over the steering wheel) gets over a lane without looking in their mirrors and almost marries me with the concrete median. Then its back to reality and the realization that the only racing I ever want to really do is on my trusty computer where its safe!
I am usually a turn-based strategy (TBS) gamer but with the slim pickings these days, due to the popularity of real-time games, I had to broaden my horizons. That or play Master of Orion II (MOO2) for the 2 billionth time. Even with MOO2’s great replay ability, the game gets old after, say, the millionth time. I enjoyed SimCity, which is a simulation, so I decided to branch out into that category of games. That led me to games like Enemy Engaged Commanche versus Hokum and Grand Prix 3.
I was suggested this game because over others due to its game play. So far I have not been disappointed. The feel and control you have is superb. As a normal driver, the playability seems to be pretty realistic. But since I have never actually raced a real racecar, I cannot attest to its ultimate truism. The game play is enhanced by the addition of driver aids, which help you to better handle your car. Such aides include but are not limited to: braking assistance and auto-right-the-car. The braking aide allows helps you slow for corners and such. The auto-right feature keeps the car facing the right direction during the occasional spin out.
The graphics are excellent as far as I could tell. During installation, the game will test your system and suggest optimal settings to run in. This helps it run more efficiently with less drag on the system. The backgrounds are quite nice and the detail of the cars and roadside objects are pretty good. I have a pretty nice system so experiences may differ slightly.
The sound is just average though. The engine sounds in the car are quite good, however it lacks any sounds of the cars around you. Some of the other sounds, like the crash and skid sounds, aren’t too bad but could have been better. The sound just didn’t impress.
Overall, I was quite thrilled with the game. There wasn’t really anything that left a negative impression about the game. The game play and graphics were great. The sound was just average but in no way detracts from the racing simulation. And when the other drivers cut me off or I crash, I don’t have too much to worry about.
