My hound does great on Innova... (Reply to this comment)
by fxhomie
He's gained weight and his coat has gotten softer. He put on 20 lbs from when he was rescued. I also add Evo red meat and Innova canned and Evo 95% meat canned to his diet. I can't say enough good things about Innova. Further, Innova does make a senior formulation for older dogs. Doganalysis.com rates Innova 5/6 stars and Evo 6/6 stars (the highest). Highly recommend these products.

Whippet Loves It! (Reply to this comment)
by michellesf
I have a 36 lb 2 1/2 yr old Whippet who loves Innova Large Breed and thrives on it. I weaned him on it (mixed it with current food for about a week) when he was 1 1/2, and he's been eating it solely ever since. He has regular bowel movements (sometimes they are loose), his hair is soft, and he's full of energy and is always ready for his long daily walk ~ rain or shine!

I was watching another Whippet who also loved it. For the first few days, he did have gas and diarrhea, but he became "normal" after he got used to it. (Nerves could have also been to blame since he was out of his normal surroundings...)

I highly recommend this food and have always heard great things about it from many sources. It's more expensive and hard to find, but worth it! fyi...Trader Joes is a great place to get natural, healthy dog treats.

As the stomach churns & the gas burns - INnova is OUT (Reply to this comment)
by awa413
I am so glad I came here and read suzi's review. While I was reading it, I was amazed. The exact same thing was occurring in my 3yr old German Shepherd, Sadie. She was actually vomiting, had diarrhea, and actually snapped at my 5yr old son then turned on me. I could not figure out what was going on - but after reading suzi's post, it all made sense due to the timing of everything.

Sadie is normally a very sweet, loving, loyal, and QUITE protective of my son - so, I can only assume she was in some discomfort. In addition, she is well trained and obedient.

After changing her diet to Innova Dry AND Innova dog biscuits, she was stinking up the place for days with the most horrendous gas you have ever encountered!

I am now waiting for an order I placed online of Innova canned food for her; however, now I wish I never ordered it.

She never had any other dog food other than Nutro brand, but Nutro was starting to aggravate me with their quality standards, since 2 out of 3 boxes of Nutro dog biscuits were loaded with moths, webs, insects, and eggs. I was angry because I had been so loyal to them for 3 years. (and yes, I believe the moths & friends came from their facility since this was not occurring at just one single store in a single town, it was, and still is, a problem in multiple stores in multiple locations).

However, she never had ANY gastrointestinal problems before the switch to Innova.

I so much wanted he Innova to be the choice for my beloved pet - with all of its natural and wholesome ingredients - but now I am fairly certain I will switch back to Nutro! (and yes, Suzi's comments was/is the turning point - so thank you Suzi).

It appears Suzi did not attract many positive fans here in this Innova comment section, but perhaps every one will review their disbeliefs.

I definately do not feel that Kuma's digestive noise was due to his age or whatever - it was due to this food. It just doesn't react well in some dogs.

For the record, I did introduce my dog to this food SLOWLY. She does like the taste and licks the bowl clean - just don't be around when this stuff vaporizes and heads for the light at the end of the tunnel.

Don't Doubt (Reply to this comment)
by dogfoodguru
First, my condolences on the passing of Kuma.

Second, feeding Kuma a top quality, non-senior formula food probably contributed to a longer life. Senior formulas are based on the myth that older dogs should have less protein. But all the recent studies support having senior dogs consumer higher protein foods. So the Innova Adult formula was a plus, at least in that regard.

Dogs will react differently to foods. Gas and diarrhea that doesn't go away is probably an indication that the formula was too rich for Kuma's system, but certainly was not harmful.

Personally, I'd pick any Natura food (Innova included) over anything made by Nutro, especially now that Nutro is owned by Mars Petcare.

Innova Puppy (Reply to this comment)
by flipgirl
I currently have an 8 month old Shih-tzu x Bichon mix puppy. I'm feeding her Innova puppy and she loves it! I used to feed her Eagle Pack Holistic Selects Chicken and Rice Meal, which is a great food as well but she just wasn't crazy about it. So I tried Innova because I had read on many sites that it was one of the best and I liked that the first three ingredients were meat. Actually, I had first tried Merrick's food for puppies Chicken Pot Pie and it had made the tear stains around her eyes worse and her behaviour was so erratic. So I changed to Innova.I was concerned however, about the calorie content as the Eagle Pack food has 386 calories per cup and Innova Puppy has 500 calories per cup. Since Shih-tzus have a tendency to gain weight easily, I watched her carefully. She's been on it for the last three months and her tear stains are better, she is much calmer and she is active and healthy. She just spent a weekend in the country with 3 Border Collies and a Bernese Mountain Dog and kept up with them no problem. She went on a long hike and swam in a river and still was ready for more. I have also heard that it has caused diarrhea in other dogs though so your concern is valid. Innova may simply be too rich for older dogs. Who knows, my dog may experience the same thing when I change her to the adult food. I do find she poops more often but it's not diarrhea. What I find interesting, is that their adult food has 57 more calories per cup than the puppy food. I would recommend Innova but each dog is different and there is not one perfect food for all dogs. I would recommend both Innova or Eagle Pack BHolistic Select foods to anyone who wants to try and switch foods. There are a lot of good dog foods out there. I don't see a problem changing foods as long as it is done gradually. However, I would also recommend that you do your own research as vets are not traditionally trained in nutrition and usually sell foods from which they get kickbacks. (e.g. Science Diet, Iams, etc.)

You should be able to find an online delivery service for the food. If your dogs love and enjoy it, thrive on it, that is what you need to give them. All animals are different.

Take care and thanks for stopping by.

My Dogs love this (Reply to this comment)
by dakirra
My German Shepherds have been picky eaters since they were puppys. I tried all the good store bought stuff and they hated it. A breeder told me about Innova, so I found a feed store near me that sold it and bought a bag. The dogs loved it and it's healthy for them. My male has numberous health problems so finding a healthy dog food was a must for him. I have just moved to Yuma AZ and I went to the website to find a dealer near me, but it doesn't work for me. I sent the company an email and if they don't respond I will call them. This food is just too important to my dogs health to live without it.

I would totally disregard Suzi's comments on the gas end digestive upset her elderly dog experienced after eating this food. There is no reason to believe that Innova was the real issue since virtually dietary change will cause that problem in dogs.

I have 2 dobermans, 1 red male, 2 years old and a fawn female, 15 months, and will only feed them Innova. They recently went to the vet for a check up (they were due for a thyroid test, which can be a problem in dobies) Our vet sends her thyroid work to Mich.U. and the results came back with a note saying it was the best blood work he had ever seen and wished they were his dogs. I think that says it all.

I have two four year old cats. After being told that Iams was not the quality food I thought it was, I began researching cat food. Between my research and the feed store near my house highly recommended Innova and Wellness I am sold. So far the boys just love Innova EVO, which is also a big plus.

Truth on Dog Food ... (Reply to this comment)
by marleneviola
After rescuing both of my dogs... 130lb Shepherd (Harley) and a 5lb Yorkie (Brandi) I wanted to give them the Best food I can. I did A LOT of research before I gave them the Innova food. I also did give them just a little more and more before totally switching them over. And I have to say They love it! Of course they love the steamed carrot or apples (or yogurt) that I put in the food once in a while, but in general they like this food a lot.

It does not have any 'fillers' so they eat less to be full. So it may be more expensive, but they eat less than other foods... And think of the less you will spend on vet visits cause the food is so healthy ;)

If some of you could read the things that are put in the dog food out there you would be amazed! Things like... The vats of fat taken from fast food restaurants, bought and sprayed on the dry foods to make the dogs like the food... And some gruesome things... I don't want to mention, but you should know about.. They take the animals that were 'put down' from vets and use them for some dog foods... With the chemicals that were injected into these animals... Now put in your pets body.

A quote from another website
"Low quality foods like puppy chow have been shown to contain: roadkill, euthanized pet animals, cancer-infected cows and sheep, and various other inferior meat-sources both as meat by products and rendered fats (animal fat or animal by-products can contain any animal source the company wants to use). They are preserved with chemicals that have been banned from human consumption for causing cancers. The grains they use are cheap and often moldy, also banned from human consumption for health reasons."

Not to mention the testing that is done on done on animals to bring you these less expensive food you can find in the grocery store.
If the food just had all natural ingredients, like Innova, there would be no reason for animal testing.

Ok, ok, ok, ... I will now get off of my soap box and let you choose for yourself.

Here are some links to back-up my comments... Lets see if these get noted here :)

Thanks for listening!

Welcome to epinions! I certainly am not blaming Innova for Kuma passing away at 16 years old. He had a long life!

I now have a lab/border collie mix and a Shar-pei/lab mix, both young. The Shar-pei/lab mix was diagnosed with a mast cell tumor on her leg (it was removed a week ago). I now have to reconsider what food I want to serve the girls.
I want the healthiest possible so they have the longest lives possible.

Thanks so much for your comment, and hope you will write reviews on Innova food or whatever you feel passionate about.

I don't agree (Reply to this comment)
by sheristarr
I actually joined epinions to respond to this review!

I did a lot of research on dog food before I decided on Innova. I will buy ONLY Innova or Wellness for my dogs. The ingredients are incredible. I was surprised that a vet would not agree about the five food groups. I volunteer with several dog rescue groups and have asked various vets/experts about their opinions of Wellness and Innova - and all of them have been excellent.

It's expensive, no doubt, but when it comes to dog food I think you get what you pay for. The ingredients are all top quality and human grade.

I'm sorry about Kuma, but I doubt that four days of adding Innova to his foods years before he passed away, probably had very little to do with his passing.

Thanks and I'm sorry for your loss. Yes, the petfinders website is wonderful. I'm looking for a second dog, so Lacy isn't so lonely during the day while I'm at work. There are so many great rescue dogs (and cats) who need and deserve loving homes. I'm going to visit one today on my lunch hour at work. Hope its a match. Otherwise I'll be going to adoptions at local pet stores on the weekend.

I am so sorry... (Reply to this comment)
by cubmomma

Your loss of Kuma must have been very hard. But, please don't beat yourself up over giving him this food for a few days almost 4 years ago. We want to see our pets happy, and when they gobble down food that they love, it makes us happy, too. It's hard to tell when a food will give our pets trouble.

I just lost my cat of 17 years, and I am fighting feelings of regret. We gave him the most wonderful care, but I think it's just natural to think how you could have made their life better when you have a pet for so long.

By the way, I went to the petfinders web site. I am so impressed. I have added it as a bookmark.

Wrong food (Reply to this comment)
by NineNine
It was too rich for him. The "green bag" is the adult food, which is too high in both protein and fat for older, less active dogs. Feeding the wrong food for a dog, then finding out that it upsets his stomach is not what I'd call a useful review. I'm sure that my dogs would get sick if I fed them puppy food, too.

I'm glad this brand works for you. My chow who cannot eat this food passed away a few months ago, so I am not adverse to feeding it to the newish dog. . . I shall see.

I did feed Solid Gold to my dogs for a while, but then heard that there food without their supplement (an add'l $20) does not provide enough vitamins/minerals. I can't afford the extra minerals/supplements and resent that it isn't in the food.

Excellent point, and thank you for reading and commenting on my review. I can't see going to the expense of testing my dog for one company's food that doesn't agree with him. Nutro works for him, so I am sticking with that. I didn't say that Innova wasn't good for other dogs, merely that it is isn't appropriate for my dog. Many people love it!
