This past year we adopted an 8-week old boxer pup and started out feeding her Iams brand puppy food. She didn't seem very interested in the food at all but would eventually eat some of what was placed in her bowl. At her first visit to the vet she was weighed and our vet asked us what brand of food we had been feeding her. I told her we were using Iams and she suggested that we might want to try another brand because our boxer was not gaining much weight. She also mentioned that some dogs will eat most any brand of food and some prefer certain brands to others.
I came home and did some research on different brands of food. We had also enrolled our dog in puppy obedience lessons. At one of the training sessions she handed out a sheet of paper that listed different brands of puppy food that had been tested and were deemed healthy. She mentioned that many new dog owners had contacted her over the years asking for a puppy food recommendation. Several on the list were listed as "human grade" meaning the ingredients used were as healthy as those consumed by humans. At the top of the list was Innova Dry Puppy Food. I also subscribe to a Boxer related list and a few of the breeders had also suggested feeding Innova even though the price is higher than most brands.
So we decided to make the switch from Iams to Innova. We followed the directions that suggested we make the transition slowly over a week by cutting back the amount of Iams and substituting more of the Innova food. After a week our boxer was eating only the Innova brand, and it was clear that she preferred it to Iams. She stopped playing with her food and started eating the recommended amount. The next time we visited the vet and was weighed she was much closer to the normal weight given her age and build.
Innova has proven to be an excellent brand of puppy food. It is more expensive than most brands and can be hard to find. I've not seen it at Petsmart or Petco. Overall we have been very happy with our choice to feed our boxer Innova Dry Puppy Food.
