Simple Yet Effective to a Certain Degree

Plot Details: This opinion reveals minor details about the movie's plot.
Described simply as "one of the very best horror movies of the last 10 years" by Total Film and part of the new wave of extreme French horror movies, Inside (A l'interieur) is one of the more recent "disturbing" movies in the horror genre, being released in 2007 in France. Directed by Alexandre Bustillo, a name I had never before heard of before watching this film, "Inside" takes the viewer on a tense journey of a pregnant woman stalked and attacked by a mysterious mad woman in the comfort of her own home. She is desperate for her unborn baby...so expect blood, and lots of it!
After watching the sensational "Martyr's" and being very impressed by it, I had increased faith in the French horror movies so decided to take a chance with "Inside". The main thing about this movie is that it has a very simple plot, as mentioned previously. Although the plot is basic, it is effective, or at least it could be if it the movie was gone about in a different way. What I mean by this is that, yes, I bought this movie expecting to see blood and guts, but the gore was overused and so became alot less effective and took emphasis away from the original simple, but psychologically disturbing storyline. I must admit, I was taken aback by some of the cringeworthy scenes in this movie e.g. the caesarian of the unborn child, but much of the gore in this movie was fairly random - it seemed like the director was just throwing in random ways of killing people, I mean one guys gets stabbed in the head! Therefore, most of the stand out scenes in this movie were due to gore rather than creepiness. What I did really enjoy about this film however is the suspense created throughout the product. A majority of the movie focused on mother to be Sarah's best attempts to escape from the unexplained home invader, resulting in moments of uncertainty over whether she will make it out alive or not. Having said this, "Inside" seems to have elements from a variety of horror genres - the point just mentioned relating to a survival styled film such as Resident Evil. Although other elements relate to genres such as psychological horror and gore which was another part of the movie I picked up on.
This leads me to my conclusion of the film. There is something for all horror movie fans in "Inside" - the dark psychological storyline which exploits your deepest fears, the gore (godammit there is ALOT of gore) and also the action which accompanies the survival aspect of the story. All in all, I would recommend "Inside" but don't expect anything life changing. Certainly expect an onslaught of violence, multiple death scenes and a hell of alot of bloodshed however!
