Pros: Great price and value. Very simple setup. Sleek and stylish appearance.
Cons: Screen is easily smudged.
I still miss the days when Zenith ruled the planet.
But as I continue to make the transition to HDTV in our home, Insignia is becoming our standard.
I purchased our second Insignia LCD HDTV a few months ago.
The Insignia NS-LCD37-09 is a great value and a very stylish addition to one of our bedrooms.
Although it is only 720p, together with our FIOS HDTV broadcast, it really delivers a very crisp picture, offering the ability to easily toggle screen sizes to optimize the viewing experience.
Setup took just a minute or two. The base attaches very easily and securely to the monitor through the use of a simple hand screw system.
The screen is highly polished, but care must be taken to avoid leaving fingerprints, as they will be readily evident, particularly in the right light. Cleanup, however, is predictably simple.
The remote is intuitive, however, I use it only to toggle between screen sizes, as our FIOS remote does not handle that aspect of control. But in the absence of a set top cable box, the remote would be quite simple to use. In fact, the initial setup, using the remote was also quite simple, although channel scanning may be a lengthy procedure.
For a unit of this price, there are ample inputs, including component, HDMI and PC inputs.
The sound is quite good and does not suffer from an annoying characteristic of one of our other Insignia sets, in that there is no perceptible lag time between sound and lip movement.
Interestingly, the standard charts regarding the size of the TV screen relative to the size of the room, significantly overestimates the size needed. Typically, a 37 inch screen is said to be appropriate for viewing of no more than a distance of 10 feet.
The bedroom that we placed this set in is approximately 22 feet in depth and I feel that the quality, including the ability to read the everpresent crawls and television guide information is excellent at that distance.
Regarding contrast ratio and the ability to withstand direct light, the unit performs very well. Our previous traditional set suffered terribly from direct sunlight. Unfortunately, the source of that light, through our semi-circle window well above our headboard is not very amenable to blinds. Viweing television during the early morning was difficult due to the glare.
However, the Insignia does beautifully with the challenge of direct sunlight. The colors continue to be intense and glare has not been an issue. I am now able to watch my early morning CNBC broadcasts and read the screen crawls with no difficulty.
I very highly recommend this unit as either a primary television or an extra set in a guest room. It is an excellent value.
