Pros:Good idea, easy to use.
The Bottom Line: Inspector Hector Plaque Detector Pre-Brush Rinse for Kids is an okay product that can help children brush better, but the flavor needs improvement.
Most children can use some assistance in the tooth-brushing department. Even though my children are nine and ten years old and have been brushing their own teeth for a few years now, every day I need to remind them to do so. Most of the time, my reminders are met with grumbles, and sometimes I send them back to the bathroom because I know they just have not brushed long enough or thoroughly enough.

I was glad to receive a free sample of Inspector Hector Plaque Detector Pre-Brush Rinse for Kids which is designed to help children focus on areas of their teeth that they may have missed brushing. The blue liquid is mint flavored, so I knew right away that my daughter would give me trouble in trying it since she does not like the taste of mint, but that my son would at least give it a real try.
This product is intended for children over six years old and younger children may need assistance in using it properly. Before brushing your teeth, unscrew the cap and gently squeeze the bottle until the blue liquid gets to the "fill line" (about ten milliliters) in the neck of the bottle. If you squeeze too much into this area, the extra will drain back into the bottle. Pour the measured liquid into a cup and then rinse your mouth with it for about thirty seconds, before spitting it out. You should not swallow this rinse, and if more than the measured amount is swallowed, medical attention should be sought.
Once the liquid is out of your mouth, there will be a blue tint on portions of your teeth, and those are the areas in which you should focus on brushing. The blue color was easy to detect, and brushed off with toothpaste, without leaving our tongues or lips blue.
Both of my children and I tried the Inspector Hector Plaque Detector Pre-Brush Rinse for Kids, but none of us were particularly impressed with the taste. My mint-hating daughter tried it once, but barely kept it in her mouth for the full thirty seconds because she could not stand the taste. If a child will not use the product properly and on a regular basis, it will not do her any good.
My son, who usually likes the taste of mint, and will use toothpaste and mouthwash that is intended for adults does not care for this mint flavor, though he has used it for the past few days since we opened it because he is a good guinea pig. He does only use it when I remind him to, but I do not know how many more days he will be willing to do so. For me, the flavor was nothing remarkable, except that it did have a slight medicinal smell and taste.
Unlike other dental and hygiene products that we have used in the past, the blue-colored liquid did not stain my white counter top or white sink, and I have to presume that in the week that my ten year old son has been using this, at least some has spilled someplace.
Overall, I like the idea that the Inspector Hector Plaque Detector Pre-Brush Rinse for Kids helps children determine where they need to make sure to brush, but, if my children do not care for the taste, it is not helpful to me. It is more time-efficient for me to remain in the bathroom with my daughter during tooth-brushing time to ensure she is doing a thorough job, than to spend time trying to convince her to put this minty rinse into her mouth.
Even though this product fulfilled its claim to show us where plaque was most abundant on our teeth, my daughter refuses to use this product and my son has asked me not to buy a replacement bottle when this one is done because he does not like the taste very much, so for our family, it is not a great product.
The Fleishman-Hillard Co. provided a sample of this product in exchange my honest opinion.
