Pros: Good idea, easy to use. Cons Lousy flavor.
Cons: Taste could be better.
My children are nine and ten years old and have been going for regular dental checkups for a few years now. My daughter has had no cavities and my son has had only one small cavity, but if there is a product available that helps reduce the risk of cavities, it is worth a try. Inspector Hector Tooth Protector claims to do just that.
I had never heard of Inspector Hector Tooth Protector before so I was glad to try out a free sample on my children. The pink liquid is labeled "Top Secret Bubble Gum" flavor, and it smells overpoweringly like bubble gum when you open the cap, but the taste is not as bold.
This is recommended for ages six and up and is fairly easy to use. After brushing your teeth, simply remove the cap and gently squeeze the bottle until the pink liquid gets to the "fill line" (about ten milliliters) in the neck of the bottle. If too much is put into this area, the extra will drop back into the bottle. Swish the liquid around your teeth for one minute and then spit it out. To maximize the effect, you should not eat or drink for thirty minutes after using this product.
This anti-cavity fluoride rinse is alchohol free but should not be swallowed. If more than the measured amount is swallowed, medical attention should be sought.
Unlike the mint-flavored Inspector Hector Plaque Detector which we also tried, I thought that this bubble gum flavor might be more to my children's liking. Though my daughter gave this product more of a chance, she really did not care for the flavor, even though she generally likes the taste of bubble gum. My son, who normally likes mint flavoring better than the taste of bubble gum, liked the taste of this bubble gum flavored after-brushing product than the minty pre-brush product.
Although adults can use this product, the taste was definitely that of bubble gum, and after using it, I was left with a sweet aftertaste which I did not care for. There was no pink color left on my teeth or mouth area, nor was any pink stain left on my white sink or countertop.
This product was easy for my children to learn to use, but sixty seconds seems like forever to them as they swished the rinse around in their mouths. If did not have a timer in the bathroom, I am sure they would spit it out much sooner than they are supposed to.
My children have generally had good dental checkups, so I am not sure how I would determine if this product would actually improved their teeth or not. Since my daughter did not really care for the taste, and my son could take it or leave it, I probably would not purchase the Inspector Hector Tooth Protector it again, especially since my son will use the adult rinse and mouthwash that I already buy for my husband and myself.
The Fleishman-Hillard Co. provided a sample of this product in exchange my honest opinion.
