Pros: If it does what it claims, it'll help prevent decay
Cons: Messy, requires close supervision, only in girly color
The Bottom Line: Should be offered in other colors, the poison warning is a bit unnerving.

| dannyzmom's Full Review: Inspector Hector Tooth Protector Personal Care |
I received this bottle of Inspector Hector Tooth Protector Anti-Cavity Flouride Rinse in the mail courtesy of the ViJon company in exchange for my honest review of the product.
Inspector Hector Tooth Protector Anti-Cavity Flouride Rinse comes in a clear plastic 16.9 fl. oz. bottle with a measured dosage dispenser on top. It has a plastic seal over the top when you buy it so you know nobody has messed with the product. This product is a rinse designed for children to use after brushing their teeth. It is supposed to help "prevent kids cavities." It is alcohol free. The rinse is bright pink (not a selling point with my boys but I am sure girls would love it) and is Top Secret Bubble Gum flavored.
The active ingredient is Sodium Fluoride 0.05%. The inactive ingredients are: Cetylpyridium Choloride, D & C Red 33, Dibasic Sodium Phosphate, Edatate Calcium Disodium, Flavors, Monobasic Sodium Phosphate Poloxymer 407, Polysorbate 80, Propylene Glycol, Sodium Benzoate, Sodium Saccharin, Sorbitol, Water.
It is approved by the American Dental Association and according to the site it protects is effective in helping prevent and reduce tooth decay when used as directed. On the Inspector Hector website you will find links to the ADA and some fun children's activities, too.
As I said, my kids were not impressed with the bright girly-pink color. It was a bit of a fight to even get them to TRY it at first because they insisted it was made for girls. Thankfully they forgot that issue once they tasted the yummy bubble gum flavor. The directions say for adults and children six years and older (adults?? I can't say I know many adults who would choose a bubble gum flavored mouth rinse...but to each their own, right?) it should be used once a day after brushing teeth with toothpaste. After removing the cap, you should hold the bottle upright and squeeze until the liquid reaches the fill line (any excess will flow back into the bottle once you stop squeezing...or onto the bathroom counter if you are one of my children). It should be swished for 1 minute and then spit out...not swallowed. The directions also say that you should not eat or drink anything for 30 minutes after use...so bedtime would probably be the best time to use this product.
My kids (ages 6 and 9) had a hard time swishing for the full minute. They lasted about 20 seconds before getting bored, giggling, and nearly snarfing it out through their noses. Instead it ended up getting sprayed all over the sink and surrounding area. I guess we need some more practice. Thankfully this rinse doesn't stain nearly as badly as the blue Inspector Hector Plaque Detector product. Unfortunately, it does leave a slight pink stain on the teeth. My sons were really upset by this and wanted to brush again, but I assured them (hoping I was right) that their teeth would be white again in the morning...I was right.
Just like the Inspector Hector Plaque Detector Pre-Brush Rinse for Kids, there is a warning on the back of this bottle about calling poison control if the child swallows more than what was used for rinsing. Personally, this made me quite nervous. Why would I want my child rinsing their mouth with something that is dangerous?? Also, the bottle should be kept out of reach of children...well then, how are my kids supposed to use it??
Inspector Hector Tooth Protector AntiCavity Flouride Rinse is available at stores like WalMart, Target, Walgreens etc., and retails for $2.99 to $3.99.
