Cons: Being discontinued by manufacturer & support announced only until Sept 2003
No microphone
The Bottom Line: Intel has decided to refocus their development efforts on their core business - which means chips, so now, if you can find one, is a great time to buy.
We recently ventured into webcasting and videophone with this product. At first, we purchased the Video Pro model, but found that the only additional feature was a built-in mic, and this was available at 1/3 the cost of the higher-end unit.
It has excellent optics for a webcam but remember that you aren't talking a $1,000.00 lens and focal product, so don't expect HDTV quality. It is so simple to use, it's almost shameful. Stills, videoconferencing (via NetMeeting is easiest), dumping from camcorder or vcr are great features. The software package is excellent, although one hiccup with the directory service Intel signed up with - they shut down back in March of this year.
Physically the unit is tops in my books - not from a 'looks pretty' perspective, but from the point of view of sheer usability. Low-lying unit sits nicely atop the monitor on a just-tacky-enough rubber covered base. It comes with a decent length cable for moving it around. I added a USB hub giving me a bit more length of cord to deal with if we want to sit in a more comfortable chair, etc.
A couple of issues installing so be sure to follow the instruction with exactness - especially where turning off virus detection is concerned. I forgot to do that, and ended up on the phone to California and Oregon for an hour editing the regedit file on my PC so I could install it properly.
We got it predominantly for videoconferencing, and find that it is good, so long as everyone on the line has high speed internet connectivity. If anyone on the meeting is on dial-up, then beware and expect all kinds of problems with response, speed, and delays.
If you are looking for a fun new on-line pasttime, check out this unit. Ease of use and overall quality and convenience make this a 'must-buy' for gadget types.
