P!!!Flip Chip Screams!

Written: Apr 25, 2000
Rated a Very Helpful Review by the Epinions community
Pros:Cheap, Overclockable to 825Mhz, Reliable, Runs Cool, Easy to install, Easy to Overclock
Cons:The stock Cooling Fan

Well I finally upgraded from my old skool Pentuim 233. I built my own system this time. It's really alot better to do so if can. When you go out and just buy a pre-made system your gettin riped-off. They put the cheapest hardware in those machines. My computer was a NEC Ready 9750. It was a great machine. Never had any problems with it.

Well I have been collecting hardware for about 2 months now, and im finally finished! :D I got the Pentium !!! Flip chip with a IWill Slocket2 converter card. THe P!!! Coppermines are really hot chips right now. You can Overclock them to about 825Mhz!!! Overclocking is when you bump up the Front Side Bus (FSB) and the Voltage on the chip.

The P!!! has some really great new features. SSE, FSB which comes at 100 default. When I first did some Benchmarks on this chip I was amazed. I did some demo tests in Quake!!! and UT. I have a Voodoo 3 3000 AGP X2. I was getting about 65Fps (Frames Per Second). Thats pretty damn good. I was only getting about 15Fps on my old system which was running a Voodoo 2 PCI.

The P!!! comes in a Slot1 and a FCPGA (Flip Chip). The Slot1 is also a really great CPU. I know that the 1Ghz is out now and I just think that anything over 600Mhz is just bragging. I mean what are most people going to do with anything over 600Mhz? NOTHING!

The P!!! Coppermine does cost a little bit more ($100) than the AMD Atholon. I was thinking about going for the AMD but, I just had to keep with Pentium. The quality and reliable is just alot better.

Installation:

The installation was a snap. I have got the Iwill Slocket!! converter card and it was really easy. The only hard thing was setting the jumpers on the Converter card correctly. I have also installed the Slot1 and that is really easy also. You can really do anything to hurt the Chip.

Price:

I paid $224.00 for my Coppermine. I got it from Egghead.com. Right after I ordered it, they went out of stock on the chip. I was so glad that I ordered it when I did. Most of the computer shops out there are asking for like $259. Thats just way to much. So I got lucky!

So if you are looking to upgrade your CPU and Mobo. Go with the P!!! Coppermine Flip Chip. Its an excellent Chip. Im sure that it will last me at least 2 years. You really cant go wrong with this CPU!!!!!
