Pros: Cheesy good fun for all
Cons: Gets annoying after a while, takes up a lot of table space
What's a good way to bring a 32 year old and a 6 year old together? Besides, the T.V. anyhow. It's the Darth Maul Interactive bank! My son and husband could not be farther apart as far as taste. They kind of do their own thing. One of the things they do agree on is Star Wars! Since my husband grew up watching the original one, he decided to introduce my son to it as well. He loves it! Hence last Christmas' gift. I gave each one a bank, including myself. My son called dibs on Darth Maul.
Breaking The Bank on Down
This is one cool bank, it looks somewhat like a trophy. It has a pedestal, that Darth Maul stands on. The pedestal has STAR WARS emblazoned across the front, in bold gold letters. Darth Maul is made of some tough plastic and holds his lightsaber in the closed position until activated. He also speaks some standard lines from Episode One. The voice is just like that in the movie, eerie and deep. There is a slot located on the top part of the pedestal in which to deposit money. The bank comes apart easily as well to get to the coins, when need be.
The other 3 are basically the same build, and are just as durable. While I don't suggest tossing these down flights of stairs for testing purposes, they will live through a few bumps and bangs. I should know as my son and husband tend to be on the clumsy side and have knocked these off the table a few times.
Operation & Features
Deposit Money into Darth Maul. Simply insert coin into the slot, and Darth Maul comes alive. He says a variety of things as well as moves from side to side. All of sudden his lightsaber extends, and is ready to do battle! The lightsaber and fighting sound effects are pretty cool, and make play time in our house pretty interesting.
Motion Sensor activates when you move in front of the bank. When it senses motion it comes to life again. Darth Maul knows you are there and is ready to do battle again! His sword extends, and he blocks, swerves and moves from side to side.
Interactive with the 2 other banks (Qui-Gon Jinn, Obi-Wan Kenobi) for awesome combat action. Simply attach the bank on either side of Darth Maul, by fitting it into the puzzle piece like slot. Press the button, or insert coins on both banks and watch them go head to head! For Three player action, repeat and watch all 3 of the banks go wild in combat action. Remember, though it's motion activated after that, so you will have 3 banks going nuts, and loudly dueling it out.
Batteries should not be too much of a problem, since we have never replaced the ones it originally came with. Neither of the banks seem to be battery hogs, and have lasted for the better part of a year. They keep going...and going...
Where Do They Go?
While the banks are uber-cool and sound awesome, they are a bit cumbersome. When you have all 3 attached they do take up most of the table, or coffee table you perch them on. They do not fit on my bookshelf, or on my mantle, since the base is too wide and they are a little too tall. I have since taken them apart from each other and only take them down from the closet when we duel at dawn. This also saves me a bit from my son and husband constantly hitting the button or depositing money in it to cause a reaction from mom rather than the bank. ;-)
If you have the room to store these out in the open, they do make good conversation pieces. I know we have them out at times when company is over and slip a coin in just before they arrive. So when they walk by the bank activates and gives them a nice startle. Evil, ain't we?
Too Cheesy To Pass Up
I have to recommend these, I just can't give them a bad review. The Darth Maul bank is the coolest by far. I just love a good villain. They make my son and husband happy, and were affordable enough to buy all three. Even though they tend to drive me a bit bonkers after a while, I must admit they are fun to me as well. I guess some of us just never grow up eh?
