Pros: Entertaining short story with likable returning characters.
Cons: Short
The Bottom Line: Interlude in Death was mush shorter than the full length In Death books, but it was still entertaining.

| dragonfire88's Full Review: J. D. Robb - Interlude in Death: Library Edition |
I've been reading the books in J.D. Robb’s In Death series for several years. I was hooked with the first book, Naked in Death, and I pick up the new ones as they are published. Robb has also written a few short stories as part of the series. I just read Interlude in Death, the second of those short stories, again. It was originally published in a collection of short stories. In March of 2006, it was released on its own as a short book. That was also done with Midnight in Death, the first short story in the series. The In Death series is set in a futuristic New York city. Interlude in Death took place in the spring of 2059, not to long after the events in Betrayal in Death took place. The series is focused on the investigations of homicide detective Eve Dallas and her life with her wealthy husband Roarke. Each book has been about a different case that Eve was working on. Several other characters, like some of the other police officers that work on the cases, have returned in most or all of the books. Interesting aspects about life in the future were mentioned in every book. I’ve really enjoyed reading about the gadgets that Robb created for the series. Eve was unhappy about having to give a seminar. What made it worse was that she had to do it at a conference that was being held off planet at a resort Roarke owned. During a reception the first night, Commander Skinner, a legendary retired police officer, insisted on meeting Eve. It wasn’t a pleasant meeting since he tried to convince Eve to help him take Roarke down. When someone connected to Skinner was found dead, Skinner made it clear that he believed Roarke was responsible. Eve worked to find the truth even though she technically didn’t have jurisdiction at the resort. Interlude in Death was very short at just under ninety pages long. Even the shortest of the books in the series has been more than twice that long. Since this was a short story, the plot couldn’t be as developed as the ones from the full length books. I wasn’t disappointed with the lack of development since I fully expected that before I read this short story. I did think it was an entertaining addition to the In Death series that is worth reading. Nothing really important was shared or happened during the story, so people who have been reading the books really won’t miss much if they don’t read this. When the story was first released, I was a bit disappointed that a situation left over from Betrayal in Death wasn’t dealt with or even mentioned. It does make sense that Robb would wait until the next full length book to do that. Interlude in Death was set completely in space on the resort that Roarke owned. The resort had been mentioned in some of the earlier books when it was being built and when Eve and Roarke spent part of their honeymoon there. Eve hated traveling off planet and was only there because she had to lead a seminar at the convention. Not much about the actual convention was included in the story, especially once Eve was trying to investigate the murder. The small amount of mystery was connected to that. The mystery wasn’t as complex since the story was shorter. That didn’t bother me since I knew it wouldn’t be long enough for a strong mystery to be developed. There wasn’t as much suspense as has been in most of the books, but there was a surprise or two. The story wasn’t as violent as many of the books. Eve and Roarke met during the first book and their relationship has been important to the books ever since. It has changed and grown with each book and I have really enjoyed reading about that. I’ve never felt like their relationship has detracted from the murder investigations. There was a sex scene and one or two sexual situations between them during the story. The sex scene was descriptive without being overly graphic. People that don’t like to read those types of scenes should probably avoid this story and the series in general. Almost all of the characters in Interlude in Death had been introduced and developed in previous books of the series. There really wasn’t any additional development for any of those characters. Eve and Roarke were really the only returning characters that had much to do in the story. Commander Skinner was introduced fairly early in the story and was central to what was going on. He received a decent amount of development for the amount of time he was in the story. J.D. Robb is the name that author Nora Roberts decided to use when she started the In Death series. I knew that when I started reading the In Death books. Once I had read all of those that were out at that time, I moved on and started reading the books she wrote under her own name. I have really enjoyed both groups of books and think other people could as well. The In Death books tend to have stronger mysteries and more violence. The only other difference is that the In Death books are set in the future. With the book Remember When, the first half of the book took place in current times and the second half was set in Eve’s time. I liked the way a mystery connected both halves of the book. Eve’s portion of Remember When took place between Imitation in Death and Divided in Death. Nothing vital to any of the main characters took place in Interlude in Death. It was just a short, entertaining addition to the In Death series. People won’t really miss anything if they don’t read this story, but I do think it is worth reading.
