It must be looks, after all it sure isn't about gameplay or substance. Don't get me wrong, the Tomb Raider series is fun. I could watch her (Lara Croft) do backflips and run and jump and swim all day, but after a few minutes of eyecandy, I'm ready to play something else.
I found the controls to be awkward (at best) and the scenery (other than Ms. Croft) was not particularly well rendered. Often I found myself running (and jumping and tumbling and side stepping) around in circles for entirely too long before I could spot a way to proceed in the game.
Killing the wide assortment of predatory beasts proved to be little or no problem either. Sometimes it was simply a matter of standing on a ledge and taking potshots at the animals below, while other times the autoaim feature took care of it for me and left me without any real challenge.
Whoever designed the levels is obviously very skilled and took great pains to create intricate, well thought out levels. I hope he/she finds stimulating work elsewhere on a more interesting project once this cash cow has been fully milked.
All in all, it's a fun game to show your (male) friends, but I found actually playing it to be somewhat tiresome.
Until they come out with Tomb Raider 2000, I'll be playing something else.
