Pros: A thoroughly engrossing read
Cons: Meanders a bit; no biggie
The Bottom Line: There is a bit of "Alexander Supertramp" in all of us, (myself very much included) and this book successfully taps into some of "his" inner workings.

| tangento's Full Review: Jon Krakauer - Into the Wild |
Though I don't have a whole s**tload of time to read these days,
I usually resign to a nice Stephen King or Kurt Vonnegut excursion
or just lose myself in an image-heavy book on ghost towns, whenever possible.
However just recently, I was working on a huge High School remodel
project, and they just happened to stick me in the long and narrow book
storage room to install some new lighting. Before long I found myself
thumbing through some of the required reading of our times for curiosity's sake.
One of the books I happened across in that strange and dank room was one
that I could not put down once I started, and that still haunts me several weeks
after having finished it. I even spent quite a few of my lunch breaks in that room,
reading and reading. Food had become completely irrelevant to me.
The book is entitled 'Into the Wild'
and was written by Jon Krakauer.
It deals with the true story of a young man who, after graduating college,
abandoned his parents, siblings and most of his worldly possessions
- and hit the road on a quest for... well we're not really sure, but he
wanted OUT of what most of us consider to be 'The Ordinary World'.
The story unfolds at a very controlled pace and this is a large part of this book's
overall appeal - thus in my opinion it would be unfair to reveal much more than I already have.
I will only say that this is an immensely tragic, haunting and disturbing yet fully
enlightening examination of the restless and idiosyncratic nature of the Human Spirit.
I am pleasantly surprised by the choice of this book for High School
curriculum, and I HIGHLY recommend this book to absolutely anyone.
