scmrak's Full Review: Irwin 3057018 40 Piece Screwdriver Bit Set
Power screwdriver bits are peripatetic little guys, so DIYers tend to need a constant supply. It's irksome to grab the drill/driver only to realize that you have to hunt for a bit - almost makes you consider returning to hand-powered screwdrivers, except that they disappear, too! My latest in my shop's "bit-retention program," thanks to a present from the Ms, is an Irwin 40-piece Screwdriver Bit Set (stick number 3057018).
Irwin starts with an impact-resistant plastic case, one that latches securely and has rubber bumpers on the corners to protect everything as the set slides around in the bottom of the toolbox. The case's interior has six ranks of molded slots for snapping in the bits. The yellow background is printed with a cross-section image of the bit, and each slot's marked with the bit size.
Thirty-five of the bits are "shorty" insert bits about an inch long, designed to be socketed into the included hex-drive magnetic bit holder. The other four are two-inch power bits in the most commonly-used sizes (#2 and #3 Phillips, #2 and #3 square drive). The remaining insert bits include eleven Phillips (seven #2s, the size used for drywall and deck screws) and seven square-drives (with five #2s). There's also one each of three slotted tips, seven Torx® sizes (10-40), and seven hex heads (3/32" to 7/32"). All bits have the size stamped on one side of the shank.
The bits sit securely in their slots, almost too securely, as the short bits are a little tough to pry out. The face-up display makes it easy to see where bits are missing from their slots. The secure case with its sliding latch keeps any potential escapees from making a break for it.
The bits are of good quality S2 steel, though the insert bits are clearly disposable - especially that gaggle of #2 Phillips bits, which is why there are seven. The magnetic holder grabs the inserts tightly, yet allows rapid change-outs. The power bits are made of a higher-quality steel, as they're designed for high-torque use. The hex-shank bits are just right to fit a drill chuck. The set's only shortcoming is that it doesn't include nutdrivers, but that's just an excuse to buy another cunning little plastic case full of small parts!
A convenient set of bits that collects all the common screw-head types and sizes in one easy-to-find box, the Irwin 40-piece Screwdriver Bit Set is a must for a well-equipped shop.
