Ivar's on the waterfront - a piece of Seattle history. When the city put in the Waterfront Streetcar in the '80s, you knew there would be a stop within a very short distance of Ivar's - there just *had* to be. It wouldn't be right otherwise.
What to say about a place that has such fond memories...stopping by on the way to an M's game, hanging out on the waterfront with friends, taking out-of-towners there for their first Ivar's experience, laughing along with the over-worked yet pleasant counter folks, trying to explain how the ordering process works [they take your deep-fried orders first, then come back for everything else, to keep the cooks working at maximum efficiency]...mmm. Good stuff! If you like your fish fried and your chowder thick, Ivar's is for you.
This particular location, the very first Ivar's might I add, features the added treat of the Flying Seagulls Karamazov, who are more than happy to take your French fries however you want to dish 'em out - throw them in the air, throw them over the edge of the dock, hold them in your hand off the edge - whichever method you choose, they'll come take them away from you. Absolutely hilarious to watch...but watch your fingers!
Location-wise, this is also a great restaurant - perfect after a day of browsing the Pike Place Market [known to locals as Pike Place or just "the Market"], wandering the waterfront, taking the Waterfront Streetcar, or even on your way someplace else, say the ferry terminal at Colman Dock. The food is affordable, the chowder and cole slaw are great, and really you can't go wrong at Ivar's. Just don't expect gourmet seafood - go around the corner to the sit-down portion of the establishment for that.
