Okay, it's not gourmet seafood. Not even close. But who can resist a basketful of steamy fried cod and hot-from-the-oil fries? Especially when eaten on Pier 54 overlooking the gorgeous Puget Sound?
Sure, this is purely a tourist's hangout, but every time I'm in Seattle, this is where I head for my fix of fish, chips, sea air and a mess of cackling, hungry birds flocking overhead for a spare morsel. Expect a crowd because this joint *always* seems to have a line.
Ivar's does have other restaurants that are more upscale. So if you're interested in serious seafood and plusher accommodations, go to the Ivar's around the corner.
I recommend the fish basket: 2-3 pieces of fish with a healthy helping of fries. Douse with some tartar sauce or lemon juice and you're good to go. Because it's touristy Pike Place area, you're gonna pay a bit more for this delicacy: maybe $4-5 a basket sans Coke.
Next time you're meandering along the waterfront, check out Ivar's. Fish, fries, ferries--what more could you want for so cheap?
