A Delicious Afternoon Tea: The Ivy Keep's White Chocolate Mousse Flavoured Black Tea

Written: Jan 09 '09 (Updated Jan 09 '09)
Pros:Great flavor, really tastes and smells like white chocolate
Cons:Can be easy to overpower the taste with excess sweetener
The Bottom Line: Great relaxing-time dessert tea for any white chocolate lover, definitely recommended to anyone who enjoys a full, rich flavored black tea.

Let’s face it, we all like to spoil ourselves sometimes. Often, the tendency is to allow extra relaxation time, choice sweets or other such indulgences to give ourselves that little treat we all deserve from time to time. How many enjoy the smooth, sweet flavors of white chocolate to chase the stresses of the world away? I know I love few treats more than a piece of white chocolate and some hot tea to curl up with during my afternoon reading time, but like so many people in today’s world I have to keep a close eye on just how many sweets I allow myself.

I found a solution to this dilemma in The Ivy Keep’s selection of teas…a delicious White Chocolate Mousse dessert tea that allows me to enjoy the two flavors I like so much, but without all the calories a piece of chocolate carries with it. I approach any tea with caution the first time I buy it because the flavor on the label isn’t necessarily what the tea will actually taste like, but given how much I’ve liked previous teas from The Ivy Keep I had high hopes for this one.

White Chocolate Mousse is a loose-leaf gourmet tea that is brewed by adding one teaspoon per cup to a pot of near-boiling water and allowed to steep for 3-5 minutes, or until the desired flavor is achieved. I generally use water drawn fresh from the tap, heat it to boiling then remove my pot from heat for a good minute or two before adding tea; if the water is too hot it will scald the tea and change the taste.

Within 30 seconds of this tea starting to brew I could smell a very distinct white chocolate aroma wafting from my teapot, and the flavor certainly didn’t let the aroma down. My White Chocolate Mousse brewed up into a very smooth-flavored tea with an unmistakable white chocolate flavor.

Surprisingly, contrary to my nature, I like how this tea tastes with sugar better than honey. A splash of milk and just a little bit of sugar and I felt like I had both my cup of black tea and my piece of white chocolate. Use sweetener sparingly, white chocolate is not a very sweet chocolate and it’s very easy to overpower its flavor with too much sugar or sugar substitute.

Overall, this is one of my favorite teas from The Ivy Keep and one I’ve really enjoyed for relaxing with my book on these cold winter afternoons. If you’re looking for a flavorful dessert tea that’ll satisfy some sweet cravings without all the calories of a piece of candy and value smooth, high-quality tea then this is a must for your tea collection. At right around $3.50 USD for about 20-25 cups of tea from http://www.ivykeep.com this is an affordable indulgence and really a top-notch tea.
