Pros:Well placed padding, Ventilated upper, Machine washable, Design features for removing glove, Price
The Bottom Line: Pearl Izumi's Select Gel glove is designed for comfort, it helps catch sweat, and the padding makes it possible to ride longer distances with no hand discomfort.
Last year it seemed as though riding my road bike with naked hands would have been best, especially since my gloves harmed more than helped. Just as I thought this was to be a truism, a pair of gloves came along to re-convert me to riding with padding. Pearl Izumi's Select Gel Bike Gloves has just enough padding in all the right places. Riding more than 30 miles is no longer an arm-and-hand tingling experience.

Last year I wore a pair of Novara fingerless gloves that were highly thought of. They seemed to have all of the appropriate features plus one I didn't anticipate. They had the ability to make my hands go numb and my arms tingle after only five miles. That was truly unacceptable. This year I have a new bike and it inspires me to ride longer distances—much longer with distances currently at 35 miles and intentions to increase that to 45 and 50 miles. Thanks to my Pearl Izumi fingerless gloves rides are numb-free, at least my arms and hands have sensations at the end of the ride. Some days I'm not sure other parts of my body are as fortunate.
What sets these apart? I'm easily in the category of 50+ (a senior rider). My weight could be a little lower, I don't give the impression of being athletic although I've always been fit and active, either running, riding, rollerblading or hiking most of my adult life. I'm demanding about my personal equipment, particularly when biking. I ride a road bike and while you might think paved roads are less bumpy than trails, you need to ride in Houston. My bike has a carbon frame and that helps but the rest of my body can attest to the roughness of the roads and bike trails.
The Pearl Izumi Select bike gloves are designed for both men and women. This glove features:
• Leather palms for comfort and grip
• Polyester fabric on uppers-woven design helps wick away moisture and enhance ventilation with 40+ sun protection.
• Gel padding on the webbing between my thumb and forefinger (thenar space)
• Gel padding in all of the appropriate places
• Sweat catcher on the back of thumb
• "Comfort Bridge Gel padding relieves pressure on Ulnar and Median nerves for riding comfort and superior durability"
• Affordable at under $30.
Like most gloves this has a Velcro tab at the wrist but this is designed to assist with removing the sweaty glove at the end of the ride. In case you can't find the second feature for removing the glove, look on the side of the ring finger. There is an arrow pointing to a little pocket. Use that space to push your wet glove off.
This can actually be machine washed in cold water on a gentle cycle. I have and the glove didn't crumble as I anticipated. Hang it to dry. Falling into the category of "who-in-the-world-would-do-this?" the tag advises against ironing the glove.
The Pearl Izumi Select Gel Glove is holding its shape. I'm washing this regularly, but after a ride in 95 degrees, 95% humidity (the air you can wear climate), if I don't wash these I fear that a monster might creep out of them. Seriously, this is a terrific glove and one that was recommended for riders increasing their seat time. Ulnar and medial nerve pain has never been an issue until the Novara gloves. I'm thrilled to be riding again and riding with pain-free hands and arms.
