Wow, my own brand new set of custom made clubs... In an Izzo bag...
Izzo? Who are they?
Since that day, (when my golf instructor assured me multiple times that this was a good bag), I have seen more and more of these bags on the course. Mostly in eye-wrenching yellow, however, I have also seen a few, like my own, that are a tasteful navy blue.
Lots of Storage
The first thing I remarked about this bag is that it has plenty of storage. A godsend for those golfers out there like me who love to take the entire house with them out on the course.
"Of course I need room for the 'complete book of golf', hardcover edition, signed by Palmer himself, what are you thinking??"
The wide assortment of pockets in varying sizes allows us to carry the multitude of toys, gadgets, widgets and assorted items du golf that most of us tend to accumulate in our personal quests for that coveted Green Coat and Master's trophy. And before you tell me that it's not you, remember, I've been out on the course and seen some quite hefty assortments of "game improving paraphernalia".
Make it lighter?
This bag is light. Much lighter than any other bag that I have used with this much storage capacity. For those of us who have no caddies, we know how heavy those sticks get by the end of a round, and this is definitely a large bonus with this bag.
However, the designers at Izzo found it necessary to add some extra functionality which would allow us to further lighten our load whilst waltzing around on the course. The large side compartment detaches from the rest of the bag, which allows you to leave behind most of those things you don't need while playing a round such as large, hardcover books.
Personally, the bag is light enough that I have never had to utilize it, however, I could see this "feature" ending up in the middle of a fairway somewhere, or in the water off the right-hand side of the 9th fairway where someone had their twelfth duffed shot or a slice perhaps went a little to far. (At least it will save the entire bag and set of clubs from getting wet as the result of frustration from an errant shot or two)
In the bag, damn you!
One of the biggest cons I've noticed with this bag is the fact that clubs don't seem to want to go back into the bag once they have been taken out. Needless to say, in the middle of a slightly stressful round, this can get kind of irritating. I'm pretty sure my club grips aren't any bigger than the average, so I'm including this as a con.
I've found that the narrower design of the bag does not allow for a lot of leeway when filled with a full set of clubs. Especially in the larger top section where most people tend to put their drivers. the grips of the clubs tend to get twined together somehow so the club that you just took out will not go all the way back in very easily. You typically have to force it down between it's brethren in order to get it into a safe place for travel.
Strap and stand fun
Though I have listed these two as the major cons for this bag, don't get me wrong, I would still recommend this item. These are not big enough problems to warrant a bad review, but they are annoying enough that they deserve some mention.
I have found in the time I have owned the bag that the stand tends to get kind of... well, "stuck" for lack of a better term. After sitting for a period in the tripod position, the leg springs tend to get lazy, and they don't always retract the legs back up all the way. When placing it into your car at the end of a round, for example, you end up with a bag that is actually taking up more space than it should, and it's legs tend to grab onto any free item nearby.
Much better than the single-strap variety of bag, the "backpack" or dual strap system on this bag is great. Instead of hanging the weight of all your clubs on one shoulder, (thus enabling you to do a fantastic rendition of the "Hunchback of Notre Dame"), this bag distributes the weight of your clubs evenly across both your shoulders, and as a result, saves you lower back pain. The straps are a bit of a pain to adjust, but once you have them in the ideal position, the bag balances and sits quite nicely on your back.
Overall, I would recommend this bag to everyone. It's not going to improve your game by 30 strokes, or increase your distance by 10 yards, but it will save your back, and help you to lug around all those training aids that proclaim to *improve your game*! It's storage and light weight definitely make up for any downfall it has with functionality.
