roushb's Full Review: JBL TC-1000 LCD Touchscreen Remote Control
The Harman/Kardon TC-1000 (Also manufactured under the JBL and Madrigal brand names) is a touchscreen based remote that has the ability to replace all your other system remotes.
The remote has a large touchscreen, with a scroll wheel, volume, mute, backlight, and menu hard buttons. All buttons and screens can be customized to send a signal or macro for any device programmed into the remote. What this means is that you can use the scroll wheel to control the channels for the vcr and the volume from the tv, without having to change devices. The screens can also be customized to show only the functions you want.
This remote is an "activity based" remote, meaning you set it up according to what you want to do (ie Watch DVD, Listen to CDs, etc). The computer interface lets you control all of this type of customization.
While the remote is endlessly customizible, therein lies some of its downfalls as well. You basically have to hook it up to your computer to get all the functionality out of it. Without doing this, you basically only have a multifunction remote.
It's large size and very few hard buttons confuses some people as they don't like using the touchscreen. At times the touchscreen is slow to respond, or activates the wrong button even when calibrated properly. This is particularly noticeable when trying to type in the channel you want to watch, rather than just using up/down.
Overall, it's a great remote if you want to spend some time setting it up. It can learn functions, perform macros, and all those types of goodies.
You can often find it on Ebay for less than $100, just be sure to get a model that comes with the software and more importantly, the computer interface cable. You can download the software at www.madrigal.com to ensure you have the latest version. Madrigal also has some nice planning sheets used to plan out how you want your screens to look.
