Pros: Convenient card that allows you to charge prescription drugs as well!
Cons: High APR.
After all of the trouble with credit cards I got into in college, I swore I'd never use them again! After years of paying off and paring the list down, I only have a few that I've kept open. One of these is the JC Penney card. It is more than just an average store card!
If you don't have one, but would like one, you can easily apply online at their secure site www.jcpenney.com. Click the link for customer service and you'll see the credit card site.
Your Account Information
Once you have your account, you can access your information online. You will need to know your account number, zip code and your social security number or home phone number. From here you can see anything that would be on your monthly statement, only more current. You may also use this function to send them a message about your payment or request another card.
Why is it necessary to have this card, when you have so many others? If you like shopping at JC Penney, either online or at their brick and mortar store, you can be alerted to certain sales and special savings as a cardmember. The card is "free", as it has no annual fee. If you do decide to use it, and don't pay it off, the monthly payments are low, but I don't suggest this option, as the APR is high. Mine is 21%, which I find to be at least competitive with other department store cards. If you do pay your balance off in full before the month is over, you will not incur any finance charge whatsoever!
Pay Your Bill
If you'd like, you can receive an e-bill instead of a statement on paper. The benefit of this is that you don't have a statement laying around to dispose of with your account on it! Also, you may choose to pay your bill online with their "Check-free" system, but it would be hard for me to believe that most people don't have their own billpay service. I use my bank's, so I can't comment on this particular service. The only benefit I see is that the service is free, and some banks charge for a bill pay service.
If you still like to pay your bill the "old-fashioned" way, take your check directly to a store for the Save A Stamp feature.
If you have a problem with the due date of your bill, you may contact JC Penney's Credit Card Customer Service online to get them to change the due date more to your liking.
If you have a catalog (which you can request online) you can certainly shop at home like that, calling the 800 number with your card to order, or typing in the catalog number on the site to order online. Shopping at JC Penney online is a great experience, with timely shipping and fair rates.
In addition to JC Penney, you can use your JC Penney card at Eckerd Drugs, Genovese Drugs, and online at Eckerd.com and Stonebridge-jcp.com.
We are lucky to have an Eckerd Drugstore here, and I'll admit to using the card there when money was tight. It was quite a lifesaver!
