Pros: Solid, well built, long quill travel, wide range of speeds.
Cons: Table not designed for woodworking
I needed a machine to do mortises. My first consideration was a dedicated mortising machine, but this Jet JDP-17MF Drill Press came with a mortising attachment and chisels. It is also a great drum sander, not to mention a precision drill press.
For mortising it is nice to have a lot of quill travel. The Jet has 4 3/8", which is very adequate. It is important to have a positive quill stop. The Jet has double locking nuts on the depth stop. For drilling, large bits require slower speeds. The Jet has 16 speeds, ranging from 200-3630 RPM. For drum sanding, you have a side load on machine that was designed for vertical loads. The Jet has ball bearings, rather than a sleeve, in the quill support. This is a very versatile and competent machine.
My one gripe applies to most drill presses. These machines are designed for metalworking, but most of them are sold for woodworking. The tables are next to worthless for most woodworking tasks. With this drill press, I have to build jigs for the majority of my work. The only exception to this is the Ryobi woodworking drill press. It is a benchtop tool, designed for woodworking, but isn't built nearly as sturdy as the machines in this class of stationary tools.
When you get home with the big box, get a helper. This is not a one person assembly job.
Overall, I am very pleased with this machine.
