| dkozin's Full Review: JVC Cybercam GR-DVL720 Mini DV Camcorder |
The JVC GR-DVL720 is a MiniDV digital camcorder with a large 3.5” LCD and the ability to shoot still pictures at up to 1024x768 resolution.
Zoom
The GR-DVL720 employs a 10x optical / 700x digital zoom with the zooming speed that varies according to the finger pressure. The camcorder uses 680,000-pixel CCD, which allows for relatively high resolution at high magnification levels, besides the 700x zoom will never be used, since it is an overkill.
LCD
The camcorder features a large 3.5” color LCD, which allows you to operate the camcorder from any angle (270-degree-rotating LCD). The Black-and-White viewfinder is useful when you want to conserve battery power – by turning off the large 3.5” LCD and using the viewfinder instead.
Performance
The camcorder features high resolution and well-defined object edges. There is an integrated auto light, which is useful in low-light conditions (but is power-hungry). The digital image stabilizer is quite effective.
Manual Adjustments And Integrated Auto Light
The camcorder has a built-in automatic light, helpful in cases where the dark scenes create video noise (this can happen if the programmed AE is set improperly). This condition can also be rectified by manually adjusting the exposure. The exposure can be manually adjusted, as well as the focus and even white balance. The manual white balance option is a feature not usually found in cheap camcorders and might come in handy, especially when using artificial light - a feature not found on majority of [relatively] inexpensive camcorders.
Stills
The camcorder also serves as a digital still camera and allows you to shoot still pictures at 1024x768 or 640x480 resolution modes and store them on the supplied 8Mb MultiMediaCard (MMC). The pictures then can be transferred to your computer using the USB interface (the USB cable and the USB driver with software are included). The USB connection is faster than connection using a serial port (used on older and/or cheaper models) and it is also easier to use.
The DVL720 also features FireWire (also known as IEEE1394 or i.Link) interface, which allows for much faster transfer rates for digital video – the digital video can be transferred in its native format (DV) in real time.
Inputs
There is an A/V out, S-Video out, FireWire (i.Link) and USB digital outs. The USB cable is provided as well as software.
Features
The JVC’s full-color “Night Alive” mode allows for low-light shooting. The camcorder has digital effects (classic film, strobe, slow shutter, black and white, negative, 16x9 mode, etc), digital wipes and fades... The audio dubbing and LP recording mode are present.
At a little less than 1.3 lbs, the DVL720 is not heavy and has compact dimensions. Supplied are: full-function remote control, 8Mb MMC, Li-Ion battery, USB cable, A/V cable, drivers, editing software, shoulder strap and a 800 mAh Li-Ion battery.
Bottom Line
The JVC GR-DVL720 is a good choice if you need a digital camcorder with a large 3.5” LCD that can occasionally be used to take digital still pictures at 1024x768 resolution.
