The GR-DVM76U is an ultra-compact MiniDV digital camcorder with 2.5” LCD screen.
The camcorder is small to a point where it gets uncomfortable to hold and is also quite lightweight. It features high-tech look.
Performance
The camcorder features excellent picture quality, which is even more amazing considering its small size. The picture is noise- and “color bleeding”- free. The detail level is high, aided by the camcorder’s 680,000-pixel CCD and the DV format’s ability to digitally store more than 500 lines of horizontal resolution (compare it with your VHS VCR or 8mm camcorder at less than 240 lines (plus analog noise, “dropouts” and “color bleeding”)).
The picture quality is the same in both SP and LP modes (LP allows extend the recording time by 50%). The video light is integrated in the camcorder and allows you improve picture quality and in scenes with insufficient light.
Photo Mode
The camcorder can take still pictures at up to 1024x768 resolution (using the built-in flash if needed) and store them (as well as short MPEG movie clips) on a supplied removable 8MB MultiMediaCard (MMC). The slot for the MMC is also compatible with SD (Secure Digital) cards.
Zoom
The camcorder has a 10x optical/200x digital zoom with variable zoom speed and spline interpolation. The 10x zoom is usually enough for majority of conditions, so the digital zoom is rarely used and doesn’t have a chance to decrease the resolution significantly.
The camcorder has automatic focus, exposure and white balance, which can be switched to manual mode if needed.
Night Alive
The camcorder allows you shoot in very low light conditions using NightAlive mode. But don’t expect good picture quality in this mode.
LCD
The camcorder has a 2.5” color LCD and a color viewfinder. The use of the viewfinder instead of the LCD allows you conserve battery life.
Image Stabilizer
The camcorder has an image stabilizer that removes unwanted picture shake during recording.
i.Link
The 76U (as other digital camcorders do) also features an i.Link (IEEE 1394, FireWire) interface for digital data transfer to your computer, or another digital camcorder/VCR.
USB
The USB interface is also present and the USB cable is included. It is easier to use USB to transfer you pictures to your computer for editing, emailing and archiving. The drivers and software are included.
A/V and S-Video
The camcorder has an A/V out (audio, composite video and S-Video).
Battery
The supplied rechargeable battery is Li-Ion type - it can be recharged quickly and has quite high capacity for such a small size (but keep in mind that it doesn’t last long enough to record an entire tape and the battery life is shortened by the use of LCD and/or the light).
Remote
The multi-brand remote control i supplied and allows you control the camcorder. It looks less stylish than the one that was supplied with the previous model (75U), but has better button feel. Like the camcorder itself, the remote is slim and lightweight.
Bottom Line
The GR-DVM76U is a very stylish and compact camcorder with an impressive mix of price, features and performance.
