Pros: Good quality at a low price?
Cons: Lacks some features; small remote buttons, slow rewind, fast forward, eject.
The Bottom Line: If price is your main consideration, I would strongly recommend this model as a quality buy.

| sharky66's Full Review: JVC HR-A591U S-VHS VCR |
This is the second JVC VCR that I have bought. The first one was a very nice model with multiple features but it was not a Hi-Fi model. Because of the sometimes questionable sound quality attributed to monoaural sound, I decided that I wanted to get a Hi-Fi VCR since I do many VHS recordings. I had originally bought the mono VCR because at the time I had a TV that was mono. Since then I have gotten a new TV with stereo sound and hence now I have a desire for a Hi-Fi sound VCR.
Anyway, I looked at several models, but there were two important factors that I was considering: the lowest price along with a clock readout display on the front of the VCR. I found out how much I actually want that clock display when I bought a VCR that didn't have one. I found myself continually looking at the front of the VCR for the time and nothing was there, so that was a very important feature for me.
I saw this model for the low price of $69.99 at many stores and since this was the lowest price I could find on a hi-fi VCR with a clock on the front display, I decided to buy it. I also felt that the JVC brand had good quality attached to it.
The VCR has worked really well for me so far, but I have to complain about a couple things. First, I was disappointed with size of the remote control buttons. I didn't like this at first, but I think I have gotten more used to it now. I knew that I would not like that feature, but I decided to tolerate it since I got the VCR I wanted at a low price. The other thing that I eventually discovered that was not so good was the lack of shuttling features for this VCR. On the mono VCR I have (which is also a JVC), you can pause on a frame and shuttle forward OR backward frame by frame if you desire. I was frankly surprised that this 'newer' type model did not have this feature. It has just your basic rewind and fast forward functions, although fast forward can be done at two separate speeds, which is nice.
Overall, I think this is probably one of the highest quality hi-fi VCR's you can buy at one of the lowest prices on the market right now. Other models from Panasonic and Sony were anywhere from $10-$30 dollars higher.
Update: I am slightly downgrading my review, because most recently I have noticed that the fast forward and rewind functions seem to be unusually slow. It also seems to take more time to eject the cassette than it should. Maybe all this stems from my recent experience when I needed the functions to work quickly and was really frustrated by the slowness. I just thought I needed to change this review somewhat to more accurately reflect my true opinion.
