Pros: good picture, works on a budget
Cons: no on-unit counter display
The Bottom Line: A bare bones S-VHS deck that dups well, but make sure you know what you are giving up. Consider a VHS deck with more features before buying at this price.

I bought this s-vhs vcr as a second unit to use to make dups. I wouldn't recommend buying it as your first for one main reason. There is no on-unit display of the tape counter. The tape counter only shows up on your tv screen and not all the time.
Also, this unit doesn't have the TV features of being able to enter the correct code, and have it automatically record the correct program. I had no need for this feature though, so do not miss it.
Also, I think if your purpose is to play tapes from the store and to record your own movies, and $90 is your budget. You would be better off with a standard VHS deck with more features.
In hind-sight, I would pay a few more bucks and buy a unit that has on-unit display of the tape counter, it really helps figure out where you are on the tape. I never even conceived that a VCR wouldn't have this basic feature.
I am very happy with the duplication quality, it has all the necessary connections and settings to make a good dup (S-Video and RCA). So, I am satisfied with my purchase. The dup quality is not less than hooking up two $250 decks.
The casing is cheap, but I don't have kids and am not going to be moving soon, so I sacrificed that to save money. It looks fine and is strong enough to put another VCR on top of it.
One big plus. With its lack of features, it is very easy to use. You put a tape in, and hit record. What could be simpler.
I give it a "above average" rating. Taking into account the price. It would only be average, or even below average if compared to the $200 S-VHS vcr's.
