| videonut's Full Review: JVC HR-S3911 S-VHS VCR |
The latest VCRs in the lower priced end of the line from JVC have a lot to be desired from a styling point of view and they lack any metal in the case. That aside this one performs well. The HRS3911U has S-VHS and S-VHS ET recording capabilities which put it leaps and bounds above the standard VHS decks in the same price range from other manufacturers. Of course it still plays and records standard VHS tapes. The unit is the next to the bottom of the line for S-VHS decks from JVC. The HRS3911U has a terrible mickey mouse jog shuttle wheel that is used to change the channel when there is no tape in it. If there is a tape in the deck you have to use the remote to change the channel. This wheel is also used to fast forward and rewind, I prefer to use the remote. Other than that inconvenience, this is nice deck for time shifting and the added picture quality of S-VHS makes it a welcome addition to a big screen TV. S-VHS ET allows the recording of S-VHS resolution on standard grade tapes. It works very well with a good high grade tape. This saves a lot of money because S-VHS tapes are expensive. This deck has S-VHS video, composite video and audio left and right input and output connectors on the rear along with one composite video and audio inputs on the front. The model below this one in the line has only one composite video input on the front and no inputs on the rear, which is why I purchased this one. I do an awful lot of time shifting and have a 52 HDTV and the S-VHS capability is a must for me along with an S-VHS input for connection my DirecTV receiver. Once I get a digital TV receiver to connect to that S-VHS connector I will like it even more. The tapes from standard broadcasts and DirecTV look great on that big screen. It has HIFI stereo sound with an MTS decoder as it should have. Overall a good buy. I own 2 of them as well as other JVC S-VHS decks and have never had a problem with them.
