| mdbrown's Full Review: JVC KS-AX704 Car Amp |
When I went shopping for an amp, the ones that I wanted were simply out of my alotted budget. Rather than just settle for something less I decided to look around and at least try to stay with an established brand, even if I had to gamble a bit. I ran across the JVC KS-AX504 Digifine amp. It had good published specs and was rated right around the level I wanted. For the record, this unit has the following specs: 40wx4 into 4 ohms, from 20hz-20khz at no more than 0.08% THD. It can be bridged to a 2 channel amp at 130 watts per. Features include a mosfet dc-dc converter, 2 ohm stable operation, phase switch, 0 or 12db boost at 45hz, fully discrete output stages, 4, 3, or 2 channel operation, 12db high pass and 18db low pass crossovers fully adjustable from 50-200hz, delayed turn on (no thump) and gold plated connections.
Pretty much all the current must haves are here. The real qualifier though is performance and that's where this unit shines. Quiet (no hiss), plenty of power, and the delayed turn on works as advertised. While I lack the facilities to test this unit, it certainly sounds like it surpasses it's rating. My speakers are not the most efficient and this thing powers them nice and loud without running out of reserve.
The cons are few and kind of nit picky. It is a rather large, unimaginitively designed white slab. Not real important, at least for me, since it'll spend all it's time hidden in the trunk. No remote bass boost is minor as well, it would be a nice feature to have. Nothing important wrong and all the right things right! This unit has been superceded by the newer, blue illuminated amps. If you can find this unit at a good price jump on it. I have never identified JVC with mobile amps but, if this unit is any indication, they are determined to be among the best!
