Pros: Incredibly deep bass..very powerful and clear..great "live" sound.
Cons: No manual equalization adjustment (contrary to JVC website specs)
The Bottom Line: If you are looking for the best professional quality mini system you can buy for under $300, then this is one of the first you should listen to.

| edtvntenn's Full Review: JVC MX-G500 CD Shelf System |
I have been playing, writing, selling, and listening to music for the last forty years. I have been seriously comparing different brands and models of mini systems for my personal use for the last three months. My SONY boom box bit the dust several months ago, and in the process of replacing it I discovered, happily I might say, that for $100 more dollars, that I could purchase a top quality mini system with mush better quality and many more features than a boom box. I spend a lot of time in my bedroom on the computer, and I have discovered that a mini system is a really functional and efficient way to enjoy music in that environment.
As I write this review I have a JVC-MXG500 and an PHILIPS FW-C555 (current model of 550) sitting across the room from me. After much comparing, I have found these units to be the best and am trying to decide between the two (which isn't easy.)
The first thing you notice about the JVC-MXG500 is that it's built like a tank. It seems to be reliable and should last an eternity if taken care of. But the most impressive thing about this unit is the sound....especially the bass response. There are many brands available with separate power for the woofers(e.g.,Sony, Panasonic, JBL, etc.), but this one really stands out from the competition. The bass response is very, very deep and has four equalization settings, which are very helpful in adapting to the different audio quality of sources used..(CD,FM Radio,AM radio, tape, etc) This unit also has a very good and broad mid-range response which sets it apart from most systems, which tend to boost frequencies at the lowest and highest end of the audio frequency range. This midrange response(combined with the super deep bass) has the effect of projecting a very wide and spatial room-filling sound, which is very unique in comparison with others. This is the most impressive feature, by far, to me on this unit. You really have to hear it to understand what I'm talking about. Instead of the tight compressed sound you find in most mini systems, this one has a broad expanded sound which really effects the sound of the bass guitar and drums, making them sound very realistic and "live" so to speak. This is very noticable if you are listening to a song which includes a well-produced upright bass. As I write this review I am listening to the track "Born to be Blue" from Steve Miller's incredible CD of the same title(get it!)The "presence" of the instruments in the room is very very impressive, and experience that over and over with this system. Compared to listening to other systems it is regulary "getting my attention" so to speak, and that is good! It is similar to the experience I have when I listen to one of the large BOSE surround sound displays at Sam's Club. Even at very low volumes the bass EQ allows you to enjoy a very full and deep bass response. It also features three very effective surround sound modes if that is your preference. This model is really better at low volumes than the more expensive and powerful JVC units I listened to. The bass seems to blend in better.
This unit has good FM reception and an easy-to-use, fully functional remote control which is also very important to me. My favorite radio station is a smooth jazz station in Memphis which is about 75 miles away, and this radio pulls it in fairly well in comparison with others.
The JVC_MXG500 advertises to have 240 watts max power and I would not doubt it at all. It is by far the most powerful mini system I have tried. Give it a listen.
