| scarecrowdavid's Full Review: JVC XL-PG55 Personal CD Player |
Last year I decided if I was going to spend as much time as I do commuting by Mass Transit, I needed to have a decent CD player to listen to. I went shopping with a set price range in mind, and settled on the JVC XL-PG55 for around $60.00 retail. (I dont know where they found a low price of $108, but I found mine in Sears).
Im quite happy with this unit for its purposes. I commute with a backpack, so it is convenient for me to put my CD player in the front pocket, zip it closed most of the way, and put the headphones on. The folding headphones are great,, they make it easy to stow with the player when I reach my destination.
The sound on this CD player is about average. At a decent volume, the Mids, Bass and Trebs come through clearly. This model boasts a Hyperbass setting which is just terrible. Even on the lower of the two settings, the Bass sounds muddy and distorted, and thought I had a problem with my CD before I shut it off. However, if you just leave the Hyperbass off, youll get a nice clear lower register. Another negative on this unit is the lack of a fast-forward. You can skip forward and back, pause and stop, but you cant skip forward within a track. Also note that this unit does not include AM/FM, so it is strictly a CD player. That is a personal decision, I didnt want to spend another $20 for a radio.
Positive features on this CD Player include a 4-Button Remote which serves as an extension of the headphone cord. This is very convenient for me, because it means I can keep the player in my backpack, wear the headphones, and still control the CD player with the tiny remote buttons. This is a great feature if you dont want to have to hand-hold your player, and like to have hands free. Another good feature is the rechargeable battery pack that was supplied with the unit. I simply plug the AC adapter in for a few hours while at work, and the rechargeable batteries will play for a good 3 or 4 hours before dying. I just carry around a set of alkaline batteries as a backup, and these will last me months if I just keep recharging when I get the chance.
Also note that this unit will handle both CD-Rs and CD-RWs, so if you like to burn your own CDs, this is a big plus. It was definitely a feature I wanted. All in all, Im quite happy with this CD player, and I only occasionally regret not getting the radio. For me, the remote control features is a nice compensation.
