| mzemel's Full Review: Juanita Havill - Jamaica's Find |
When working in a preschool, I was required as a teacher to provide multi-cultural books from the public library for my children to read. When browsing through the library one week, I was lucky enough to find the book "Jamaica's Find" by Juanita Havill. This book received the Ezra Jack Keats New Writer's Award, so I decided to check it out from the library.
The book is about a little kindergarten aged girl who is faced with a moral dilemma many young children will be able to relate to.
Jamaica is enjoying a day at the park. When she goes to play on the slide she finds a red hat on the ladder leading up to the slide that has been lost by another child . At the bottom of the slide, she finds a stuffed animal that also appears to be left by another child. Before heading to her home, Jamaica brings the hat to the park's Lost & Found office. She gives the man behind the desk the hat, but does not turn in the stuffed animal. She brings the stuffed animal home and tell her mother about the hat and the stuffed animal she found at the park. When her mother sees that Jamaica kept the stuffed animal she tells Jamaica she should have brought it to the Lost & Found office just like she did the hat.
Jamaica brings the toy up to her room, but before she get to her room, she overhears her parents talking about how the stuffed animal probably belongs to another child just like Jamaica. This gets Jamaica thinking about what she has done. After a while Jamaica decides she needs to take the stuffed animal to the Lost & Found in the morning.
She returns to the park the next day and turns in the stuffed animal before going to the playground to play. While on the playground, she meets a little girl about her age and asks her to play. The little girl says she needs to find something first, she lost her toy dog at the park yesterday. Jamaica then brings her to the Lost & Found and the girl is happy to get her dog back.
This story is great for preschoolers. I especially like that Jamaica did NOT make a good choice at first, but did something to fix it. This shows children they are able to correct their bad choices and change the outcome of a situation to the better.
