homeschoollisa's Full Review: Jamberry (Book with Cassette) Books
I discovered this book when I worked as a children's librarian several years ago. I checked it out and read it to my then preschool daughters. My youngest, 3 at the time, fell in love with it. I bought her the boardbook so I could quit rechecking the library's copy.
Bruce Degen, who both wrote and illustrated the story, has done a fantastic job. The words are simple and catchy. This is more a nonsense poem than a story. The words themselves don't make a big impact unless you're looking at the pictures as you read.
The illustrations depict a boy and a bear journeying through a day filled with berries in very unexpected places. My favorite illustration shows them in a hot air balloon in which the balloon is a giant berry. All around them berry fireworks are exploding.
I must have read this book a thousand times before my daughter outgrew it at about age 7. Earlier this year, I bought it for my niece for her 3rd birthday. She loves it too.
Although my daughter is now 8 and doesn't read Jamberry often, she stills loves it and insists that it has to stay on her bookshelf. I'm already looking forward to the day (in the very distant future) that I can read this book to my grandchildren!
