Sized guitars are made mostly for beginning students (children), and sometimes can double as travel guitars. For children, a small guitar should be accessible, comfortable to play and pleasant to hear. For an adult, proper intonation is probably most important. Many small body guitars suffer, however, from two common problems: poor craftsmanship and lack of proper intonation. But, Takamine has avoided these problems handily and completely with its Jasmine JS141 1/4 sized nylon string guitar.
Because we repair and restore stringed instruments, we often see small-body acoustic guitars in the workshop which have been brought in because of unplayably high action (string height) or poor intonation (inability to be played in tune or to maintain pitch). But, because we also maintain, set-up and restring guitars, we have prepared many outgrown JS341s for new/older/bigger owners.
Made of good and solid tone woods (with a spruce top, and nicely grained mahogany back and sides), with consistently good assembly and finish, this guitar is attractive to look at and cleanly and solidly made: none of the painted miscellaneous woods, glue blobs or sloppy fret work that we so often see. Even after several owners and the expected abuse meted out by children of the 1/4 size guitar group, these instruments' basic action and playability remain solid and consistent. The tone is pleasant and present, and the intonation, excellent, played all the way up the fretboard!
While there are cheaper alternatives available, the JS141 is worth every penny! And it is likely that, once outgrown by its first owner (or several owners), it will find its way into an adult's possession for travel practice. A truly sweet little guitar!
