| chinafrog's Full Review: Sheaffer Javelin Argent Silver Roller Ball |
I was looking to get my dad something really nice for his 60th birthday. It is hard to shop for my dad because he claims to need/want anything and rarely expresses interest in anything but gardening. However, one day he did mention about when he was about 30 and he got a sheaffer pen for his father's birthday. He spoke about it with such enthusiasm that I knew that he also would like to get a sheaffer.
I was working at staples at the time and had constant views of the different sheaffers that were sold there. I wanted to get him a nice pen but didnt want to spend too much money. I quickly eliminated all the fountain pen versions because I knew that getting a pot of ink was not going to happen any time soon. I soon settled on a roller pen.
I really ended choosing the Javelin because of the look and style. Have you seen this pen? It is really beautiful to look at. It is silver and has a nice wide feel when you hold it. You have a lot of control when you write with it. It is not so heavy(as I find with some Waterman models) that your hand will begin to ache. But it not wickedly light(as I find in some Parkers) that it slips off the paper.
I gave this pen to my dad for his birthday and he loved it. He used to keep it in his briefcase and take it with him to work and use it in court(he is a lawyer). One day, my mom got her hands on the pen and uncapped it. When she did, the entire inkbarrel came off with it. She broke it! I was really upset. There was no way to fix it.I bought the pen about 2 years prior so I couldn't return it to staples. I also could not buy another javelin at staples because they were no longer carrying any sheaffer pens.
So I called Sheaffer and explained what happened. The customer service was so nice and apologetic. She said that she would send me a brand new pen, no questions asked. It was so painless that I could not believe my ears! And sure enough, in about 4 days, I had my new pen in the mail. I didn't even have to mail the defective pen back to them.
The only other complaint I had with the pen is that the refills are kind of expensive. They cost about $5 per refill, and cumulatively that does add up.
Overall, I am very satisfied with Sheaffer's service and the Javelin's performance.
