| TwelveMotion's Full Review: Jenga |
Jenga is a game with a history richer then chess. It isn't just a game of tower building. It is a game for power, for honor. There are so many strategies to playing this game it rivals chess and checkers. It is a game that is played, but to play it you must understand the games history.
It all started in the Mayan City of Copan. The Mayans used to have captured prisoners play this game to see who would be sacrificed to the gods first. They played with bones of previous prisoners instead of wooden blocks, however. The loser would be killed while the winner would like to play another day. Before the Mayans disappeared the Aztecs saw this game being played. They began to play using little twigs. They didn't play for the same reasons however. Every day people would go to the center of town and play this game. Winners would get a special coin. This coin was treated like money. So the better you were in at this game the richer a man you would be. The Suix Natives also learned of this game. They played it, but they played for keeps. The loser would be killed. In order to become a man in the Suix society you would have to beat another man in this game. He would die, and you would be a man. Finally the settlers came killed all of these cutlers and made a toy out of it. They named it Jenga because they thought it sounded cool.
To play this game you stack wooden blocks on top of each other. Three blocks vertical and then three horizontal on top of that. They are 3 cm x 2 cm x 10 cm. They are kind of like little two by fours. It can be played with as many people as you want. One person starts by taking out on of the bars. He then puts in on top. Then the next does the same. Eventually the tower gets so tall and has so many holes in it that is collapses. The person who last touched it lost. He would be killed in the past, but he simply hang his head in shame.
The strategy to this game is far to long to explain all the way. But I can reveal a few Russian tricks of the trade. Taking bars from the bottom can be a good idea because so much weight is pushing down the loose block may go unnoticed; all the tension will hold it still. Taking from the top also is good because there is far less weight and very little resistance. Don't take form the center it is almost always fatal.
As you can see this game is more then meets the eye. It has a very rich history, and is endless amounts of fun. For parties, for little kids, and even for your pets. Did I mention you can build castles with the blocks? You can! Castles, towers, houses what can't Jenga do. Frankly I don't know how a family can survive without Jenga set.
