We purchased the stainless steel version of this refrigerator -- JFC2089HES -- and love it! At $2160 + tax (included delivery and take-away of our old unit), we expected a lot, and we think we got it. Of course, at only 19.8 cubic feet it's not the biggest guy on the block. But it's the size we need for two adults and one college student (only home on vacations).
A refrigerator in this price range should look great. We chose the stainless steel model to go with our other appliances. It comes with tubular bar handles on the doors as standard; fancier handles are available at extra cost. Also, the sides of the unit are black vinyl-coated metal; we were told we could get stainless trim panels that clip (or magnetically couple?) to the sides, again at extra cost. When pushed back to the wall, the front of the doors are about an inch or two in front of the adjacent countertop; the handles protrude another 2 inches or so. This is much better than our old Amana -- it stuck out noticeably into the kitchen. The Jenn Air is squat, as well, fitting comfortably under the overhead cabinets. If the height is still too much you can remove the hinge covers and save another inch on overall height. I measure ours at 68-1/2" high at the back, and 70-1/8" high to the top of the hinge covers. Overall width is 36".
After pushing it back, we unscrewed the two front feet to take the load off the wheels and keep the unit steady.
The side-by-side refrigerator compartment doors incorporate a clever flip-out seal down the middle (totally automatic) to maintain temperature. The doors only protrude another 14 inches into your kitchen space (measured from the front of the handles) when open.
The interior of the refrigerator compartment is well designed, with large adjustable shelves in the doors (they handle three 1/2 gallon juice containers in a row). There's a butter compartment, egg tray and wine bottle cradle (holds one bottle horizontally). But set up in a way we think would be typical, a wine bottle with extended stopper cannot sit anywhere without tilting over because there's no really tall space available.
The freezer drawer opens to reveal two levels of wire baskets. The bottom basket has a moveable divider, and the top basket also holds the ice container. Call them 11" deep x 25" wide by 6" high. There's a plastic tray inside the cabinet beneath the baskets that catches any drips; when the drawer is pulled out you can see straight down through the wire basket to the floor.
As for controls, you'll find a little control panel at the top of the refrigerator section. It has digital temperature readouts for the refrigerator and freezer. When set at 38 deg our lettuce froze in the vegetable drawer. There's a temperature alarm, door alarm, warning light to replace the water filter and a vacation mode indicator.
Water filter? Oh yeah! Water piped to the icemaker is filtered in a cartridge filter and made available through a spigot in the refrigerator compartment. It's a little inconvenient -- two hands are needed and the door must be open to dispense water -- but the water tastes great.
