Jerky Tenders Duck Meat ~ Be Careful with These ~ My Dog Reacted Badly

Written: Aug 8, 2009
Rated a Very Helpful Review by the Epinions community
Pros:Just Duck and natural flavorings as ingredients
Cons:My dog's system did not react well  - will not chance giving them again
The Bottom Line: Duck meat is not good for my dog's system.  Be aware that adding a new type of food/treat may affect your dog too.

Waggin Train Wholesome Duck Jerky Tenders Meat Dog Treats was a new item that I picked up from the doggy treat aisle a couple weeks ago.  I thought they were regular dog meat jerky treats at first, then noticed the word DUCK ~ Duck meat? Checking out the bag as well as the rest of the dog treat section, I noticed that this brand as well as a few others were now offering treats made with duck meat.

Wholesome Duck Jerky Tenders by Waggin Train are tough beef (well, duck) jerky treats that are made with 98% duck breast fillet, and 2% natural flavorings.  That's it.  There are NO Artificial Flavors or Colors, No By-Products, No Fillers, No Preservatives, No Grain, No Gluten, No Potassium Sorbate, No Titanium Dioxide, No Phosphoric Acid, No Potassium Chloride, and No Propylene Glycol.  Sounded fantastic -- Just duck and some natural flavorings!

These treats resemble people beef jerky in both size and shape. I would not leave these out where a jerky lover might accidentally pick one up and eat it -- of course there really is not anything in it that would hurt a person, but I would sure like to know if what I was eating was a pet or person treat!

The bag "blurbage" indicates that this treat is 97% fat free and that these treats are made from all-natural duck fillets - the best part of the duck.  If you have ever eaten duck yourself, you may know that it is a very rich dark meat poultry.  For dogs that may not be used to this type of meat treat, it may take a while to get their bodies used to this new type of food.

Leeta had a total of 2 strips in one day - she had the most horrible dark thick diarrhea for 3 days afterwards. I took her to the vet it was so bad and unusual.  The only change in her diet that I knew about was the addition of these duck meat treat.  I will not even chance giving her another one to see if this was the culprit or not.  It was a horrible 3 days for all of us.  I believe that adding this new type of meat treat threw her system in a turmoil.  I could even hear her tummy rumblings and growlings from several feet away.  Poor thing she was -- Your dog may do just fine with a switch to duck meat treats, but just be aware and keep an eye out for any changes in their stools and overall health.

The Guaranteed Analysis of Waggin'Train Wholesome Duck Meat Jerky Tenders is:

The Feeding Recommendations are:
Extra Small Dogs (under 5 lbs):  1/2 to 1 treat per day
Small Dogs (5-15 lbs): 2 treats per day
Small - Medium Dogs (16-25 lbs): 3-4 treats per day
Medium Dogs (26-50 lbs): 5-6 treats per day
Medium - Large Dogs (51-75 lbs): 6-8 treats per day
Large Dogs (76+ lbs):  8-10 treats per day
Senior Dogs: Ask your vet what's best for your dog

These treat are very low odor and did not feel greasy at all.  I think the change to a new form of meat is what upset my dog's GI tract so much.  I will not chance a reoccurance though and cannot recommend them after what happened to my dog.

Jerky Tenders Wholesome Duck treats come in a heavy plastic zip-top reclosing bag with foiled edges.  The bag should do well to keep the jerky strips moist and fresh if you take the time to "snap" the zip-closure closed after each use.

These treats are manufactured by:  Waggin'Train, LLC., Anderson, South Carolina 29623  ~  You can contact them at http://www.waggintrainbrand.com, call 866-283-2923 or at info@waggintranbrand.com

Please leave a comment if you have given your dog these treats - I would like to share your experience with them as well.

Thanks for reading!  Judy
