Peat for Your Seeds in a Jiffy

Written: Mar 09 '07 (Updated Mar 26 '07)
Pros:cheap, easy to use
Cons:none
The Bottom Line: These pellets are a great way to jump start your garden by growing from seed.

I'm a cheapskate. I like purchasing things that can be re-used again and again. That's one of the great features of my Jiffy Professional Greenhouse Kits. I do have to buy Jiffy Starter Pellets to complete the kit when I've used up the ones that came with it, though. At .15 cents per pellet, I can still call myself a cheapskate.

Using Them
Jiffy Peat Pellets look like small brown wafers. They are about an inch across and a 1/4 inch tall. The pellets have a lightweight, white netting around them. To prepare the pellet for a seed, place it in a tray and add water. Keep adding water until the pellet is fully expanded. You'll be able to tell the pellet is expanded when all the soil that is viewable is wet. I have noticed the top center is the last to appear wet. It will be approximately 2 inches tall. The netting expands with it and holds the soil in place.

After the pellet is completely moistened make a 1/4 inch deep hole in the center and place a seed in it. Lightly cover the seed with the peat. Make sure to place a lid or dome on the tray to hold in moisture and humidity, which the seeds need to sprout. Then comes the hardest part...wait for the seed to grow.

Odd pricing
Watch how you buy the Jiffy Starter Pellet. I pay .15 cents per pellet, as mentioned above. I found them for $18.00 for 100 pellets. What? If you buy 100 at .15 cents/pellet you're only paying $15.00. I think they're hoping to make you think you're getting a deal for a bundle.
Updated 4-27-07: I found a package of 72 pellets for $3.96 at my local Wal-Mart. (0.05 cents/pellet)

The Only Way I Start My Seeds
I start, approximately, 200 to 300 seeds a year. The Jiffy Starter Pellets are the only ones I use to jump start my garden. They are economical, easy to use and they work. I have a 75-80% success each year. My family and friends are always asking what I have growing. They love that they can supplement their gardens with the plants I grow and I enjoy knowing that their yards look good thanks to me.

If you've wanted to start growing plants from seeds, this is the way to do it.
