| my2girls's Full Review: Jimmy's Girl Books |
I picked up "Jimmy's Girl" on a recent trip to the library. I just finished it today and it was a good summer read.
The story is a love story, a story of first love. The main characters are Emily Hudson and Jimmy Moran. They met and fell in love in the late 60's when both were teenagers. The book takes place in present day but you learn about their past as the characters reminisce. They had a powerful first love. A lot of their memories go back to the beach where they would spend alot of their time in the summer. Then Jimmy went off to the Marines and eventually to Vietnam. Once he returned things were different and they went seperate ways. The story really is about what their lives are like 30 years later and how they both long to see each other.
Emily is an artist,a painter, and the memory of Jimmy has haunted her for a long time. She is married and has four children but her marriage is pretty lifeless. She plans to do a series of paintings on Vietnam and that is how she winds up contacting Jimmy. They arrange to meet at the Vietnam Memorial for a weekend in Washington. On the surface the purpose is for Jimmy to supply her with information on Vietnam but really it is about so much more. It is about finding love lost.
The interesting thing about this book is the way the author has written it. Every other chapter is told from the point of view of either Jimmy or Emily. For instance when they first meet in Washington you get Emily's perspective on their reunion and what it was like. Then in the next chapter you get the story told from Jimmy's point of view. It is very interesting to see what each character is thinking and feeling during the situations. I really enjoyed the style that the author used.
A good portion of the book is spent on the weekend Emily and Jimmy share in Washington. Afterwards they each return home and you learn, from each, what that was like. They each struggle with their feelings and the situations they are presently in.
This is a good, quick read and although I would have preferred a different ending, I was still happy overall with the story. I think many people can sort of relate to the feelings of the characters as they ponder their first loves and wonder "What if?".
