Pros: Relatively inexpensive, hyperextension protection, lightweight
Cons: No calf protection, the thigh extension is flimsy.
The Bottom Line: Buy them if you got the money. The hyperextension protection is the most important thing. Maybe not as good as the SG8090, but good enough for me.

| madlee's Full Review: Jofa Shin Guards SG8040 |
These are part of the Center Ice jofa line which means that they are all very similar and suitable for Pro use. None the less, Jofa has long been known as the innovators of the shin guard and very focussed on protecting the player.
I had an old pair of Jofa's that were years old and didn't have the hyperextension protection which is a fairly common injury in hockey. I also didn't like the fit of the old pads with HUGE knee caps that made me look like an elephant. I decided to buy a new pair.
Buying hockey equipment is a hassle. Unless you live in Canada or some area of the US where hockey is the sport to play, you have very little selection.
These 8040's are 3rd in terms of quality in the Jofa line. The top of the line is the 8090 followed by the 8060. They are all pretty much the same. The top of the line features more calf protection and more side of the knee protection.
First thing, the new jofa pads are really light. I'm used to taping my pads on or using an elastic strap. The strap included with these pads is non elastic, which tends to make the pad a little loose. I'm not completely used to this yet.
The front of the pad is top notch and shouldn't be any problem. Fit is important and it's a bit hard to get my knee situated in these. The top of the thigh extension which protects the area above the knee is a bit off too. First, it's not long enough so it tends to catch on the leg of the pant. Annoying. Secondly, it is made of molded foam which bends funny. Perhaps larger pants would resolve this.
Other than the lack of protection for your calf, and the thigh extension, these pads are great.
