| divotman's Full Review: John Deere Gt235 Tractor |
I have been using an older Dixon ZTR (cone drive) for over 3 years to mow my 2-plus acres. It has been nickel-and-diming me to death. So when it went into the shop before even getting 2 complete mowings this spring I knew it was time to look at something more reliable and better suited to my rough lawn.
I started researching many models through literature, internet and personal testing. I was hesitant to switch from a zero turn mower to a tractor style because of all the trees I have. But after researching garden tractors I found that the turning radius has been greatly reduced on many models.
I had originally decided to not buy a John Deere as many said they were overpriced. I narrowed my research of MANY models down to two, the Simplicity Conquest and the John Deere GT235. On paper, the Simplicity Conquest seemed to have a few more fluff features for the same money (fuel guage, clock). That was before I felt how solid the mower deck was. Add to that an 18 horse V-twin Kawasaki engine compared to Briggs on the Simplicity (not to knock Briggs, but my Dixon had a Kawasaki engine and it was the only thing on that mower that didn't give me problems) and the choice was easy.
My shiny, new John Deere GT235 was delivered last week. Some of the pros are comfort, ease of use and speed. The large tires, springs under the seat and seat cushion provide a comfortable ride. The controls and operation are straightforward and simple. It is a little more difficult to trim around all my small trees than with the zero turn but it only adds about 10-15 to my overall mowing time. Not bad for 2-plus acres.
My only reservation about buying this garden tractor was the need to pull out on the PTO button before reversing while mowing to avoid killing the mower deck. I know this is a safety feature, but I do too much trimming to do this each time I reverse. There is a very simple way to bypass this system that allows effortless mowing while reversing.
I am confident I made the right choice and bought a long-lasting, reliable machine. Just in case something does go wrong the machine comes with a 2 year parts and labor warranty.
